Trump Sees ‘Surge Of Grassroots Contributions’ Following Indictment
Former President Donald Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign received an influx of contributions after news of his indictment became public. A grand jury indicted Trump for alleged hush money payments made to porn star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 election cycle, making him the first ex-president to be charged with a crime. Despite the indictment, Trump’s campaign continued with wheels turning for his potential presidency, and his team reported that he received over $4 million in contributions within 24 hours of the indictment.
The Trump campaign stated in a press release that this “surge of grassroots contributions” indicates that the public sees the indictment as a “disgraceful weaponization of our justice system by a Soros-funded prosecutor.” Approximately $1 million of the funds came from first-time donors. Trump sent an email to his supporters after the indictment referred to Bragg’s investigation as a “witch hunt” carried out by the “corrupt ruling class.” The email stated, “The Deep State will use anything at their disposal to shut down the one political movement that puts you first.”
Defenders of Trump, including some Republicans who could be his opponents in the 2024 presidential race, accused Manhattan District Attorney Bragg and the Democratic party of abusing prosecutorial power for political gain. House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, and House Administration Committee Chairman Bryan Steil even sent a letter to the Manhattan district attorney asking to interview Bragg and requesting documents and communications regarding his investigation of Trump. The majority of Americans (62%) see Bragg’s case against Trump as “mainly motivated by politics,” according to a Quinnipiac poll released on Wednesday.
