Trump sets the record straight on why he thanked Roberts at joint address
President Donald Trump blasted news outlets for speculating on his first address to Congress without contacting him for clarification.
Chief Supreme Court Justice John Roberts was in the U.S. Capital Tuesday to listen to Trump’s speech alongside Justices Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett. This was Trump’s first time speaking to Congress since he began his second term, but it was Roberts who got a shout-out after the speech when Trump shook his hand and said, “Thank you again. Thank you again. Won’t forget it.”
“Like most people, I don’t watch Fake News CNN or MSDNC, but I understand they are going ‘crazy’ asking what is it that I was thanking Justice Roberts for?” Trump wrote on Truth Social late Wednesday. “They never called my office to ask, of course, but if they had I would have told these sleazebag ‘journalists’ that I thanked him for SWEARING ME IN ON INAUGURATION DAY, AND DOING A REALLY GOOD JOB IN SO DOING! The Fake News never quits!”

Roberts swore Trump in ahead of his first term as well. During that first term, Roberts ruled in Trump’s favor in key Supreme Court decisions surrounding abortion, the electoral college, among other things. However, Roberts also ruled against Trump’s claim of “absolute immunity” when it came to his tax filings and financial records.
Over 36 million viewers tuned in to Trump’s speech, which was too early to be considered a State of the Union address per the Constitution.
