Trump shows ‘durability’ that was missing in first term – Washington Examiner
teh article discusses President Donald Trump’s current standing compared to his first term, emphasizing his perceived “durability” despite some criticism over recent tariff policies. Polls indicate that his approval rating has stabilized after a minor dip, with around 47% of voters approving of his job performance. This indicates that the public is willing to give Trump time to execute his agenda, which has helped him maintain support, notably among his base, including some black and Hispanic voters. The article also notes that Democrats seem to be losing ground in voter favorability, which may complicate thier efforts against Trump in the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections.Trump’s consistent image and support, even amidst mixed opinions on tariffs, suggest that he remains a formidable presence in the political landscape.
Trump shows ‘durability’ that was missing in first term
While he has suffered an uptick in criticism following the chaotic rollout of tariffs, President Donald Trump is proving much harder to knock down than in his first administration four years ago.
Some new polls show he has been nicked by the tariff confusion, but it’s nothing the White House said it is concerned about. Polls such as Rasmussen Reports show that after a tiny dip earlier in the week, the president’s approval rating has leveled off.
Much more than in 2017, the public is giving Trump time and room to work through his agenda. That has helped to soften the blows from Democrats and steady his base, including those new to “Make America Great Again,” including black and Hispanic voters.
In a new survey shared with Secrets on Wednesday, Cygnal found a word for the phenomenon: durability.

“Almost half (47%) of voters approve of Donald Trump’s job performance, exactly the same number from our March survey, showing Trump’s durability,” its 64-page polling memo said.
Pollster and Cygnal President Brent Buchanan said voter approval of Trump’s policies and faith in his actions are keeping the president’s numbers steady. Plus, he added, Democrats have failed to come up with a winning anti-Trump message.
“While voters have mixed views on tariffs as a singular concept, Trump’s image is holding steady, and support among his base, especially on tariffs, remains strong,” Buchanan said. “Even among Republicans who are unsure about tariffs, they’re willing to trust Trump’s lead.”
For Democrats, Trump is a more elusive target in his second term. The 2017 rant-and-scream plays aren’t working because voters have seen them before and are nonplussed, Buchanan told Secrets.
“Trump was a new threat to the Left and the establishment in 2017,” the pollster said, adding, “He’s an old threat now. That’s why you don’t see the same intensity from liberals against him this go-around. It’s like taking a vaccine, your body has already fought the virus so the second response isn’t as strong.”
In his polling memo, Buchanan found it was Democrats who were losing ground, not Republicans or Trump, a trend that Gallup highlighted during the campaign.

The new memo said, “Voters view Democrats less favorably than congressional Republicans by 4% and Democrats have seen a net negative 19% shift among independent voters. The minus-15 net negative image (40% fav / 55% unfav) represents a new low for the party.”
That’s good news for Trump and the Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“Democrats are making a lot of noise right now, but our latest national data shows they continue to be on the wrong side of issues where voters prefer the approach by Trump and Republicans,” Buchanan said, citing illegal immigration and judges challenging Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
“When you have nearly a quarter of Democrats refusing to say people who are here illegally as not having broken any U.S. law, or the 52% who support federal judges having power to overturn executive actions and laws, it shouldn’t be any wonder congressional Democrats continue to be 19% underwater with independents or why 42% of swing voters and 51% of parents prefer a Republican candidate in the upcoming midterms,” he added.
