Trump leans on DeSantis to put Lara Trump at front of the line to replace Rubio in Senate
President-elect Donald Trump recently spoke to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) about appointing his daughter-in-law Lara Trump to finish out Sen. Marco Rubio’s (R-FL) term in the Senate, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Trump tapped Rubio to serve as his secretary of state, and DeSantis has free rein to appoint someone to fill the seat until an election can be held in 2026. Lara Trump recently announced she would be stepping down as co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee, which fueled rumors she was eyeing the Senate seat.
“I would say that my track record speaks for itself. Maybe having the last name Trump is just a little bit extra,” Lara Trump said Sunday on Fox News. “I’m always happy to have it.”
She and her husband, Eric Trump, moved to Florida about three years ago after Donald Trump left office. This isn’t the first time she has considered running for office. She also weighed a Senate bid when she lived in North Carolina.
Lara Trump has the backing of Elon Musk, who has not left Donald Trump’s side since the election. Vice President-elect J.D. Vance has not weighed in on the seat.
DeSantis and Donald Trump had a rocky relationship after DeSantis ran for president this year. DeSantis frequently mentioned Trump’s various legal problems, and Trump attacked his personality in the primaries. However, those fights were mostly patched over in the spring when the two met and made amends.
Trump is also reportedly considering nominating DeSantis for secretary of defense if former Fox News host Pete Hegseth, who is facing a wide range of accusations related to drinking habits, sexual assault, and ties to Christian nationalism, can’t be confirmed in the Senate.
Trump and DeSantis will be attending the Army-Navy football game this weekend. Hegseth is also expected to attend, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Those close to DeSantis said they would be concerned about the optics of tapping Trump’s daughter-in-law for the seat as there is a long line of Florida Republicans eyeing the post. Lara Trump has never held elected office and has not been a longtime resident of the state.
DeSantis said he will make his decision in January.
