Trump Special Counsel Jack Smith to Subpoena Secret Service Agents
Trump special counsel will subpoena Secret Service agents on the former president’s handling of classified documents
Special Counsel Jack Smith has taken steps to subpoena various Secret Service agents who were near former President Donald Trump to testify in connection with Smith’s inquiry into the former President, according to reports.
These Secret Service personnel are expected to testify on Friday in front of a Grand Jury in Washington, D.C., according to Bret Baier of Fox News.
The Secret Service agents are presumably subpoenaed in relation to an investigation into Trump’s handling of classified documents, which involved an FBI raid on his Mar-a-Lago residence last August.
Since the Justice Department launched an investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents, President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence have been found to have improperly stored classified documents. Special Counsel Robert Hur has been assigned to investigate Biden’s alleged mishandling of classified information.
Others who are reportedly subpoenaed to testify include former White House advisors Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, former Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, and Pence.
Pence argued against the subpoena from Smith because of the separation of powers, citing that he was serving as the President of the Senate during the Capitol Riot on January 6, 2021.
The judge decided that Pence is immune from answering some questions regarding his job as President of the Senate but must attend the Grand Jury and answer questions.
Jack Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and potential involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot.
