Trump still has confidence in Johnson despite failed Mayorkas impeachment vote
Former President Donald Trump maintained his support for House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) on Thursday even though the House failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday night.
Trump spoke to reporters shortly after the Supreme Court of the United States heard opening arguments Thursday in Trump v. Anderson, a landmark case concerning Trump’s ability to run for the White House in 2024 pursuant to the 14th Amendment, and he was asked about Republicans’ stalled impeachment efforts.
“I do have confidence in him,” the former president responded. “I very much do. I think he’s a very good man, and I have great confidence in him.”
The Mayorkas impeachment failed by a 214-216 vote, but Johnson has signaled he plans to bring the measure to another vote as soon as next week.
Johnson is also central to Trump’s efforts to dissuade Congress from approving President Joe Biden’s border security and foreign aid package, worth roughly $120 billion, ahead of the election in November.
Trump has suggested on social media that the legislation is a political “trap” laid for Republicans to shift blame off Democrats regarding the historic border crisis.

“The ridiculous ‘Border’ Bill is nothing more than a highly sophisticated trap for Republicans to assume the blame on what the Radical Left Democrats have done to our Border, just in time for our most important EVER Election,” he wrote on Truth Social on Monday. “Don’t fall for it!!!”
