Former President Donald Trump Considers Participating in Future Republican Presidential Primary Debates
Former President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of joining upcoming Republican presidential primary debates. While he skipped the first debate, he opted for a pre-recorded interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.
The second debate is scheduled for September 27 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California. It will be broadcasted on Fox Business and Univision.

During an interview on Todd Starnes’s radio show on August 31, President Trump expressed openness to participating in future debates. When asked if he anticipated joining the debates, he responded, “I might. I mean, you know, it’s possible.”
President Trump acknowledged his fondness for debating and attributed his success to his performance in previous debates. However, he mentioned that his current lead in the polls might make it unnecessary to participate.
According to FiveThirtyEight’s GOP presidential primary poll average as of August 30, President Trump holds a commanding lead with 50.3 percent support nationally, while Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis trails at 14.8 percent.
The former president considered his interview with Tucker Carlson on X (formerly known as Twitter) a “tremendous success.” He even remarked that it might be preferable to a debate.
The first debate, held in Wisconsin on August 23, attracted approximately 13 million viewers. In contrast, the Trump–Tucker interview garnered nearly 200 million views as of August 24. It’s important to note that views on X are counted when a person views a post, regardless of whether they watched the entire video.
According to a recent Economist-YouGov poll, 61 percent of Republicans expressed strong or somewhat approval of President Trump’s decision not to participate in the first debate. Meanwhile, 22 percent disapproved, and 16 percent were unsure. The poll was conducted between August 26 and August 29.
Regarding the second debate, 57 percent of Republicans believed President Trump should participate, while 17 percent disagreed, and 26 percent were unsure, according to the poll.
During the interview with Todd Starnes, the former president was asked if he saw any potential running mates at the debate. Although Arizona Republican candidate Kari Lake was suggested, President Trump did not respond to the question.
Earlier this week, President Trump praised Vivek Ramaswamy when talk show host Glenn Beck inquired about considering the 38-year-old biotech entrepreneur as a potential running mate. President Trump expressed admiration for Ramaswamy’s statements regarding his presidency.
President Trump released a short video on his Truth Social account, criticizing some of the presidential hopefuls from the first debate as “second-tier” candidates. He specifically mentioned former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson.
The former president currently faces two federal cases and two state court cases against him. In Fulton County, Georgia, President Trump and 18 co-defendants were indicted on August 14 for their involvement in challenging the state’s 2020 election results.
President Trump pleaded not guilty in the Georgia election case on Thursday and waived his scheduled arraignment for September 6.
