Trump supporters revel in his return to DC ahead of Inauguration Day – Washington Examiner

Trump supporters revel in president-elect’s return to DC with inauguration eve rally

No longer feeling like a so-called silent majority, President-elect Donald Trump‘s supporters have traveled from far and wide to help him commemorate his second inauguration, despite frigid weather conditions upending months of planning by his inaugural committee.

Supporters, some of them holding coffee cups and wearing weary facial expressions, possibly because of Friday and Saturday’s pre-inauguration balls and other programming, were wrapped for blocks around the Capital One Arena, the host of Sunday’s inauguration eve rally, despite the rain and even the forecast of snow later in the afternoon.

INAUGURATION DAY 2025: EVERYTHING TO KNOW AHEAD OF TRUMP TAKING OFFICE

Susan Campbell Reneau, 72, a writer and former Montana Republican state Senate candidate, donned a U.S. flag cowboy hat and was draped in a Trump flag pinned together with a button of the president-elect’s face.

“I’ve been celebrating since Nov. 5, so I’m just thrilled to be here,” Campbell Reneau told the Washington Examiner. “I had tickets to the inauguration, and, of course, now the inauguration has been a little bit disrupted, but I’m still celebrating.”

Thomas Chappo, 64, of Florida, who is part of Veterans For Trump, agreed with Campbell Reneau, but was particularly critical of outgoing President Joe Biden and his Democratic Party.

“I’ve been waiting for this for the last four years, man, because I think everything this president did to us that’s in office now, I’d rather not say his name, but he just screwed us,” Chappo told the Washington Examiner. “Everybody in this line feels that way. That’s why we’re here, and that’s why we voted him back in.”

Like Campbell Reneau and Chappo, Martha Ortega, 62, of Chicago, is encouraging Trump to take action regarding the southern border and illegal immigration on Day One.

WHAT TRUMP HAS PROMISED TO DO ON DAY 1 IN THE OVAL OFFICE

“I am so grateful that he is going to, you know, our country is free already. I feel it, even though he’s going to be inaugurated tomorrow, he’s already working,” Ortega, who is among the ranks of Latinos For Trump, told the Washington Examiner. “My generation, my kids, my grandkids get to experience freedom.”

Heavily-armed military and law enforcement security made its presence known outside Capital One Arena, with garbage trucks and other vehicles complementing fencing to protect supporters after the New Year’s Day terrorist attack in New Orleans. Vendors selling inauguration hats and scarves also provided the opportunity to keep them warm as they sought to capitalize on the sense of occasion.

Tesla, SpaceX, and X CEO Elon Musk is expected to speak at Sunday’s rally before Trump, in addition to performances by Kid Rock, the Village People, and Billy Ray Cyrus, who, along with the likes of Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, and Nelly, are taking part in the inauguration circuit throughout the long weekend.

Many of the supporters at Capital One Arena on Sunday will return on Monday for a livestream of Trump’s inauguration and swearing-in ceremony from inside the U.S. Capitol‘s Rotunda, as well as an indoor parade, after their outdoor counterparts on the Capitol’s West Front and along Pennsylvania Ave to the White House were scrapped because of concerns related to weather. Temperatures are predicted to reach a high of 25 on Monday, though it will likely feel closer to between 8 and 15 degrees because of the wind chill factor.

But with 250,000 people originally ticketed to watch Trump’s inauguration from the National Mall on Monday, thousands more will have to come up with alternative arrangements, including observing history from a viewing party at nearby hotels and bars.

Earlier Sunday, Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of Unknown Soldier across the Potomac River at Arlington National Ceremony before he is anticipated to attend a dinner tonight. The previous evening he, incoming first lady Melania Trump, and the rest of the soon-to-be first family took in a fireworks display at the Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia.

Trump has previewed that his inaugural address will underscore “unity,” “strength,” and “fairness,” and that he is ready to sign a “record-setting number” of executive orders and other actions “right after this speech,” which will “most likely” include a 90-day reprieve for social media application TikTok amid speculation his administration could start conducting raids to detain illegal immigrants as soon as Tuesday.

“We’re already geared up, and it will begin,” Trump told NBC on Saturday. “Very simple statement, we have to get the criminals that have come here illegally out of our country.”
