Trump teases defense position for Herschel Walker if elected

Former President Donald Trump pitched a defense strategy to Georgia voters that could include former NFL player Herschel Walker.

Trump rallied in Walker’s state on Sunday, two years after Walker failed to nab Sen. Raphael Warnock’s (D-GA) seat. Georgia elected President Joe Biden in 2020 after voting for Republican candidates since 1996. With its 16 electoral votes, it could give either candidate a lead.

“We will build a missile defense shield all made in the USA, wrapped around our country to defend ourselves and our country,” Trump said. “It’s all going to be made in the United States, a lot of it in your great state. We’ll put Herschel Walker in charge of that little sucker, OK?”

Walker lost to Warnock 48.6% to 51.4% in 2022. That same year, Gov. Brian Kemp (R-GA) kept his seat and earned 200,000 more votes than Walker, splitting the registered Republicans in the state despite Trump’s endorsement.

Two weeks after early voting began and one day before Election Day, Georgia reported that 55% of its registered voters cast their ballots already. The age group with the highest turnout was the 60-64-year-olds, with 70% casting their ballots before Election Day, as the majority of voters over the age of 50 typically do.

Voters in the Peach State broke early voting records on the first day, as the previous record was 136,000 votes cast in 2020. This year’s first day saw more than 312,000 in-person ballots.
