Trump threatens primary challenges against Chip Roy: ‘Republican obstructionists’
President-elect Donald Trump blasted Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) for “getting in the way” of Trump’s wish to raise the debt ceiling as House Republicans scramble to keep the government open.
“The very unpopular ‘Congressman’ from Texas, Chip Roy, is getting in the way, as usual, of having yet another Great Republican Victory — All for the sake of some cheap publicity for himself. Republican obstructionists have to be done away with,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.
“Our Country is far better off closing up for a period of time than it is agreeing to the things that the Democrats want to force upon us,” the president-elect continued.
In another post, Trump called Roy “just another ambitious guy, with no talent,” and he said he hoped “some talented challengers are getting ready in the Great State of Texas to go after Chip in the Primary. He won’t have a chance!”
Roy has easily won all of his elections since entering Congress in 2019.
A member of the House Freedom Caucus, Roy has been outspoken about the need to cut government spending to offset proposed tax cuts when Trump returns to office in January. Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance have called for lawmakers to raise or abolish the debt ceiling, a plan that typically takes weeks or months to negotiate.
In response to Trump, Roy posted on social media that he had no plans to raise or suspend the debt ceiling without cutting spending.
My position is simple – I am not going to raise or suspend the debt ceiling (racking up more debt) without significant & real spending cuts attached to it. I’ve been negotiating to that end. No apologies. CC: @realDonaldTrump @SpeakerJohnson @SenJohnThune @freedomcaucus

In his threat to Roy, Trump also referenced outgoing Rep. Bob Good (R-VA), a hard-line conservative who lost a primary challenge against a Trump-endorsed candidate. Roy had also previously irked Trump after he endorsed Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) in the presidential primary, as did Good.
