Secret Service to put Trump behind bulletproof glass at North Carolina rally

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on Wednesday will hold his first outdoor campaign rally since being targeted in an assassination attempt last month, but this time, he will be behind bulletproof glass when he takes the podium, the Washington Examiner has learned.

The Secret Service plans to put Trump behind a special see-through protective barrier when he appears before several thousand attendees at a rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, according to a source with firsthand knowledge of the security measures.

The barrier is similar to glass used in the president’s limousine, which is also made to protect those inside from a shooting. The Secret Service said it does not reveal means and measures for protecting those who are under its protection.

Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), will join him for the rally, which will be located between Charlotte, North Carolina; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Trump’s appearance is significant, given that it is the first time he will appear in an outdoor setting since a gunman attempted to shoot him fatally at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in mid-July.

The rally also serves as an attempt to counterprogram the Democratic National Convention being held this week in Chicago.

North Carolina is a battleground state that is up for grabs in November, making it a top destination for both the Trump campaign and that of Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump won North Carolina in 2020 by a tiny margin — 50.1% to President Joe Biden’s 48.7%.

A CBS News poll taken on Friday had Trump at 50% to Harris’s 48% among registered voters in the Tar Heel State.

The Trump campaign and the Asheboro Police Department did not respond to requests for comment.
