Trump to present his own closing statement in NY business fraud trial: Report
Former President Donald Trump to Deliver Closing Argument in Civil Fraud Trial
According to unnamed sources, former President Donald Trump is planning to give his own closing argument at his civil business fraud trial in New York on Thursday, as reported by the Associated Press.
Despite having attorneys representing him, Trump expressed his desire to speak during the closing arguments, which is highly unusual for defendants with legal representation.
The civil business fraud trial against Trump began after New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit against him and his three children in September 2022. The lawsuit alleges that Trump and his children misled the value of his company’s assets in financial statements over 200 times in 10 years.
Initially seeking $250 million in fines, James is now requesting the judge to fine Trump more than $370 million.
Trump has consistently claimed that James is targeting him for political reasons, stating, “There is no crime. The crime is against me.”
In his defense, Trump’s lawyers argue that the financial statements were unaudited estimates and were clearly presented as such. They also contend that the estimates of Trump’s net worth were underestimated, contrary to James’ claims.
Trump has been critical of Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over the trial, referring to him as a “deranged, Trump-hating judge.” Engoron, a lifelong Democrat donor, has already revoked some of Trump’s business licenses in New York. The judge is expected to reach a verdict in the civil business fraud trial by the end of the month.
