Trump warned Michigan canvassers they would appear “awful” if they certified the 2020 vote, according to reports
Trump and McDaniel Allegedly Pressured GOP Members to Not Certify Election Results
According to recordings reviewed by The Detroit News, former President Donald Trump and Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel allegedly urged GOP members of the Wayne County, Michigan, Board of Canvassers not to certify the results of the 2020 presidential election.
On a phone call two weeks after the election, Trump reportedly told GOP canvassers Monica Palmer and William Hartmann that they would look “terrible” if they certified the vote. The Detroit News reported the details of the call.
“We’ve got to fight for our country,” Trump allegedly said. “We can’t let these people take our country away from us.”
The phone call took place within 30 minutes of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers meeting ending on November 17, 2020. During the call, McDaniel also advised the canvassers not to sign the documents and promised to provide them with attorneys.
“If you can go home tonight, do not sign it. … We will get you attorneys,” McDaniel said.
After the initial vote ended in a 2-2 deadlock, with Palmer and Hartmann voting against certification, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers did not certify the election results. Michigan GOP Chairwoman Laura Cox expressed her support for the decision, stating that there was enough evidence of possible voter fraud.
However, later that night, the GOP canvassers reversed course and unanimously certified the election, solidifying Joe Biden’s win in Michigan. The following day, both Palmer and Hartmann signed affidavits expressing regret for their vote and claiming they faced intense bullying and coercion to certify the election.
“I rescind my prior vote to certify Wayne County elections,” Palmer stated in the affidavit. “I fully believe the Wayne County vote should not be certified.”
The Trump campaign responded to The Detroit News story, accusing Democrats of leaking misleading information to interfere in the election. Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung emphasized that all of Trump’s actions were in pursuit of election integrity and investigating possible fraud.
“Crooked Joe Biden and the Democrats are spinning their wheels in the face of devastating polling numbers and desperately leaking misleading information to interfere in the election,” Cheung said.
In the 2020 election, Wayne County, home to Detroit, saw around 878,000 votes cast. According to the Michigan Voter Information Center, over 1.4 million of the state’s 8 million registered voters resided in Wayne County. The county had a voter turnout rate of 62%, a slight increase from the 2016 election.
The significant increase in absentee and mail-in voting in the 2020 election sparked controversy in multiple states, including Michigan. Poll watchers at a Detroit voting center claimed they were locked out of the building, leading to chants of “Let us in!” and “Stop the count!”
An audit report from Michigan’s Auditor General’s Office confirmed that over 99.9% of the ballots in the state were legally cast and properly counted. Auditors found only 41 “duplicate” votes out of the 5.5 million cast. Biden won the state by over 154,000 votes.
McDaniel, in a statement to The Detroit News, reiterated her call for an audit of the 2020 election results in Michigan, which she initially requested in November 2020.
“What I said publicly and repeatedly at the time, as referenced in my letter on Nov. 21, 2020, is that there was ample evidence that warranted an audit,” McDaniel stated.
