Trump urged to focus on unity during inauguration speech

Congressional lawmakers are calling on President-elect Donald Trump to address national unity ahead of his inaugural address Monday after he is sworn in for a second term.

Trump spent much of the campaign trail railing against his enemies and saying he would seek retribution.

However, after decisively winning the election, Trump has signaled he may soften his stance on targeting his foes — although he has continued to excoriate his opponents, such as former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney.

WHAT TRUMP HAS PROMISED TO DO ON DAY 1 IN THE OVAL OFFICE

Republicans on Capitol Hill want Trump to focus on bringing the nation together and giving a clear vision of how he will implement the campaign promises he made into legislative action when he gives his first speech as the 47th president.

“I hope that he talks about how he’s going to make America great again,” Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) said. “Everything he campaigned on. He is the most historic win in Republican presidential history. So there’s a mandate for Congress to get its s*** together and put our country and her citizens first.”

During Trump’s first inaugural address in 2017, he said, “This American carnage stops right here and stops right now,” after listing a number of matters that were plaguing the nation.

The address featured a bleak picture of the nation allegedly beleaguered by inner-city poverty, a broken education system, and rampant crime.

Eight years later, Trump signaled he would implement a strong show of force by issuing several executive orders on immigration on Day One of his presidency. Simultaneously, Senate Republicans focused on quickly confirming key members of his Cabinet who are in their positions on Day One.

Many Republican lawmakers echoed Mace’s comments that Trump should outline his vision to the public of how he will improve the nation after four years of President Joe Biden.

HERE’S WHICH BIDEN EXECUTIVE ORDERS WILL BE THE FIRST TO GO UNDER TRUMP

“I hope he touches on the importance of the country coming together. I hope he focuses on an opportunity to heal and to unite and to focus on common goals,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND). “And then he can outline some of those goals.”

Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said he expects Trump to focus on unity, citing historical precedence.

“That’s what presidents do. They should do,” Tuberville said. “They bring everybody together. Unfortunately, the last four years we’ve been divided more. We got to start bringing people together.”

“It’s what presidents usually do. And I think I remember even President Biden doing that,” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) added about a unifying message. “The trouble is, he didn’t really mean it. So I think that’s a reoccurring theme for inaugurations, and I think it’d be very appropriate.”

The Trump transition team declined to reveal the themes the president-elect will address during his speech.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) also slammed Democrats, saying they were not interested in bringing the nation together.

“I wish Democrats would have touched on unity for the past four years,” she told the Washington Examiner.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM TRUMP’S MASS DEPORTATION PLAN

Yet Democrats said it was Trump who was dividing the nation.

“That would be a nice thing to do, but I’m not going to hold my breath that he will,” said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) about Trump touching on unity in his inaugural speech. “I don’t think he cares about unity. I don’t think he cares about bringing the country together. You know, his path to success has been based on dividing people in this country, and I think that’s exactly the opposite of what a president of the United States should do. So I’m not expecting much.”

Several high-profile Democrats are skipping the inauguration, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, former first lady Michelle Obama, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).

Republicans were nonplussed by Democratic accusations against Trump.

“Of course, that’s Democrat clickbait,” Mace said.

“I think he’s been campaigning on that the entire time,” Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) said about Trump likely calling for the nation to unite. “Success will unify the country.”
