Trump urges UAW to oppose Biden’s EV plan.
Former President Donald Trump Urges American Auto Workers to Repeal Biden’s EV Mandate in Strike Negotiations
Former President Donald Trump is calling on American auto workers to repeal President Joe Biden’s electric vehicle (EV) mandate during potential strike negotiations. Trump made this statement on Truth Social, addressing members and leaders of the United Auto Workers (UAW) union as their contract negotiations approach the deadline. UAW is one of the largest trade unions in North America.
Union Contract Expiration and Pay Hikes
The union’s current contract with the Big Three automakers—Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis—is set to expire by midnight on Sept. 14. UAW leadership is seeking a 40 percent pay hike.
The UAW has threatened to go on a full or partial strike if negotiations remain tense. Such a strike could potentially harm the U.S. economy and jeopardize President Biden’s clean energy objectives.
Trump’s Call to Reject the EV Mandate
Addressing the possibility of a strike, President Trump urged American autoworkers to firmly reject President Biden’s EV mandate, which he characterized as “insane,” during strike negotiations.
“The best interests of American workers have always been my number one concern,” President Trump stated. “That is why I strongly urge the UAW to make the complete and total repeal of Joe Biden’s insane Electric Vehicle mandate their top, non-negotiable demand in any strike.”
President Trump has previously warned that Michigan’s significant auto industry would suffer if the EV mandate is implemented. Michigan is a key swing state in the upcoming 2024 presidential race, and in the 2020 election, Michigan voters sided with President Biden.
Risk to the U.S. Auto Industry
President Trump cautioned that if President Biden’s policy regarding electric vehicles were to stand, the U.S. auto industry would be at risk of extinction, and those jobs would be lost to China.
“If that disastrous Biden policy is allowed to stand, the U.S. auto industry will cease to exist, and all your jobs will be sent to China,” President Trump warned. “That’s why there’s no such thing as a ‘fair transition’ to all-electric cars. For the American Autoworker, that’s a transition to Hell. Nothing is more important than terminating this job-crushing mandate.”
President Trump accused President Biden of yielding to environmental extremists in his party and emphasized that American labor and autoworkers were suffering the consequences of this decision. He urged UAW members to stand strong against what he labeled as “Biden’s vicious attack.”
Support for President Trump
President Trump concluded his statement by encouraging UAW members to vote for him and have their leaders endorse him for more jobs, higher wages, and soaring pensions. He assured them that he had delivered for them before and would do so again.
On Aug. 31, UAW President Shawn Fain expressed support for the Biden administration’s EV transition program, stating that the organization is ready for the transition to a clean auto industry. President Trump had previously warned Fain about the consequences of allowing all-electric cars to be made in China.
President Trump’s statements come as the Biden administration pushes for the use of electric vehicles in the United States, aiming for a 50 percent share of sales by 2030. Trump, who is running for the GOP nomination, declared that no president has fought harder for autoworkers than him and highlighted key actions taken during his time in the White House to protect the U.S. auto industry.
