Trump said in a post on Truth Social he is terminating all remaining “’Biden Era’ U.S. Attorneys.”

“Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before,” Trump argued as his reasoning for doing so. “We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY, and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”

There are 93 U.S. attorneys nationwide. It’s not uncommon for U.S. attorneys to step down from their positions following an administration change, and several have done so, but terminations are less common.

Trump often alleged the Biden Justice Department was “weaponized” against him during his run for president in 2024, claims the former president vehemently denied. The department investigated Trump in his election inference and classified documents case.

The Trump administration has fired many prosecutors involved in investigating him. Late last month, then-acting Attorney General James McHenry said that he “does not trust these officials to assist in faithfully implementing the President’s agenda. This action is consistent with the mission of ending the weaponization of government.”

A letter sent to the fired employees cited their role in prosecuting Trump. “You played a significant role in prosecuting President Trump,” the letter said. “The proper functioning of government critically depends on the trust superior officials place in their subordinates. Given your significant role in prosecuting the president, I do not believe that the leadership of the department can trust you to assist in implementing the president’s agenda faithfully.”

Trump appointed the now-Senate-confirmed Pam Bondi to be his attorney general.

One of Bondi’s early moves included pressuring Southern District of New York acting U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon to drop the corruption case against New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Sassoon refused, later resigning along with other officials in her office and the Justice Department overall.
