Trump warns Iran will be ‘obliterated’ if it tries to assassinate him
President Donald Trump has directed his aides on how they should react if Iran were to make an attempt on his life, saying it would be “obliterated.”
“If they did that, they would be obliterated,” Trump told reporters on Tuesday at the White House. “That would be the end. I’ve left instructions. If they do it, they get obliterated. There won’t be anything left and they shouldn’t be able to.”
Trump also warned Iran against acquiring a nuclear weapon as he signed two executive orders, one of which reintroduced his maximum pressure campaign on the adversary, in addition to withdrawing the U.S. from the U.N. Human Rights Council and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees.
Trump’s comments precede his meeting on Tuesday afternoon with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and come after the president has repeatedly proposed Palestinians leave Gaza amid 16 months of war following the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.
“Look the Gaza thing has not worked. It’s never worked,” Trump said. “I feel very differently about Gaza than a lot of people. I think they should get a good, fresh, beautiful piece of land, and we get some people to put up the money to build it and make it nice and make it.”
Trump’s proposal has been criticized by the likes of Egypt and Jordan, which the president has recommended adopt Palestinians. Trump spoke with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Tuesday and King Abdullah II of Jordan is expected to be at the White House next week.
Trump was additionally asked when he anticipated he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping after imposing 10% more tariffs on China’s goods and services. Trump told reporters he would do so “at the appropriate time” and that it was “in no rush.”
Canada and Mexico have been provided with a month’s grace period as Trump considers whether he is happy with the steps they have taken to respond to illegal immigration and drugs.
Trump previewed more executive action in the third week of his second presidency, including winding down the Education Department, despite nominating former Small Business Administration Administrator Linda McMahon as the department’s secretary.
“I want her to put herself out a job,” he said. “I want the states to run schools.”
