Fulton County Sheriff: Trump to be treated like any other prisoner.
The Fulton County Sheriff has made it clear that former U.S. President Donald Trump will not receive any special treatment during the booking process. Sheriff Patrick Labatt stated that if Trump is indicted, he will be treated like any other inmate, undergoing procedures such as fingerprinting and mugshots.
According to retired lieutenant Charles Rambo, once inside the facility, Trump and the other defendants will be subjected to a pat-down search and have their personal belongings, including ties and shoe strings, confiscated. They will then be fingerprinted and have their booking photos taken.
President Trump and the other defendants will likely have their mugshots taken. However, it remains uncertain whether they will go through all the typical procedures followed by regular prisoners at the facility.
Chris Timmons, a former Georgia prosecutor, predicts that Trump won’t spend much time in the jail due to the inconvenience it would cause for the sheriff’s department. He describes the “Rice Street” jail as an unpleasant and intimidating place.
In July, the Department of Justice (DoJ) initiated a civil rights investigation into the conditions at the Fulton County jail.
Charges Against Trump and Co-defendants
President Trump and 18 other individuals were indicted on August 14 by a grand jury in Georgia for their alleged involvement in attempts to overturn the 2020 election results.
The indictment against Trump includes 13 counts, such as violation of the state’s RICO act, conspiracy to commit forgery, filing false documents, and solicitation of violation of oath by a public office, among others.
If convicted on all 13 counts, President Trump could face a maximum sentence of up to 76.5 years in prison.
The co-defendants, including Rudy Giuliani and Mark Meadows, must voluntarily surrender by noon on August 25, according to Ms. Willis. Other individuals named in the indictment include Jeffrey Clark, Michael Roman, John Eastman, Kenneth Chesebro, Ray Smith III, Robert Cheeley, Jenna Ellis, Sidney Powell, Shawn Still, Cathleen Latham, David Shafer, Stephen Lee, Harrison Floyd, Trevian Kutti, Scott Hall, and Misty Hampton.
An ‘Unsafe, Unsanitary’ Jail
The DoJ launched an investigation into the conditions at the Fulton County Jail on July 13, 2023.
According to the department, an inmate died in the jail under deplorable conditions, covered in insects and filth. There are also credible allegations of structural unsafety, rampant violence resulting in injuries and homicides, and excessive use of force by officers.
Attorney General Merrick B. Garland emphasized the importance of protecting the civil rights of individuals in prisons and jails. U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan expressed grave concern over the allegations and stated that the investigation aims to ensure the safety and constitutional rights of citizens, even while they are in custody.
