Trump’s Absence Sorely Noted as Viewership for 3rd GOP Debate Plunges to 7.5 Million, Worst So Far
The Republican Presidential Primary Debates: A Lackluster Show Without Trump
Imagine “American Idol” without Simon Cowell. That’s what the Republican presidential primary debates have been like without former President Donald Trump. And the ratings speak for themselves.
In August, Trump made the decision to skip the debates, citing his overwhelming lead in the polls. On Wednesday night, five other GOP hopefuls took the stage in Miami to make their case for the nomination. However, while they fought for attention and viral moments, the disinterested audience was tuning out in droves.
The lackluster debate only managed to attract a measly 7.5 million viewers, a 46 percent drop from the 2016 debate that featured Trump and nine other candidates.

This decline in viewership follows a concerning trend, with each debate attracting fewer viewers than the last. The first GOP debate on Fox News in August drew in 13 million viewers, which dropped to 9.5 million for the second debate in September.
The ratings are even worse among the key 25-54 demographic, with only 1.3 million viewers tuning in for the NBC debate. Despite this, NBC News claimed it was their second most-watched Republican primary debate in history.
It’s clear that no other GOP contender comes close to Trump in terms of popularity and viewer interest. The people have spoken, and they’re voting with their remotes.
These declining ratings align with a recent Rasmussen poll that found a majority of GOP voters wanted to end the debates. With the fourth primary debate scheduled for December, perhaps it’s time for Republican Party Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel to consider canceling it.

How has the absence of Donald Trump affected the viewership of the Republican primary debates?
A smaller audience than the previous one. The absence of Trump, with his controversial statements and larger-than-life personality, has undoubtedly contributed to this decline in interest.
Trump was known for his ability to generate headlines and capture the public’s attention. His participation in the debates during the 2016 presidential primary cycle brought in record viewership numbers. People were eager to see what he would say next, and his presence created a sense of excitement and drama in the debates.
Without Trump, the current Republican primary debates have lacked that spark. The candidates have struggled to stand out and make a lasting impression on voters. They have failed to generate the same level of enthusiasm and engagement as their predecessor. As a result, many viewers have lost interest and turned their attention elsewhere.
These lackluster debates also reflect a broader challenge facing the Republican Party – the struggle to find a unifying figure or message. With no clear frontrunner and a wide field of candidates, the debates have become a crowded and chaotic affair. Each candidate is vying for attention and attempting to distinguish themselves from the pack, but their efforts often get lost in the noise.
In contrast, Trump’s presence in the 2016 debates provided a focal point for the party. His outspokenness and controversial statements may have divided opinions, but they also drove the conversation and helped shape the Republican agenda. With Trump on stage, the debates had a central figure around whom the party could rally and define its identity.
It is worth noting that the decline in viewership is not unique to the Republican primary debates. Political debates in general have seen a drop in interest and viewership in recent years. As the media landscape becomes increasingly fragmented and people have more options for consuming information and entertainment, traditional political debates struggle to compete for viewers’ attention.
However, the absence of Trump exacerbates this decline for the Republican primary debates. His larger-than-life persona and ability to generate controversy were a unique asset that brought in viewers. Without him, the debates have lost their edge and are struggling to captivate a wider audience.
As the primary season progresses, the Republican Party must find a way to reignite interest in the debates. Whether this means finding a new charismatic figure to take Trump’s place or rethinking the format and structure of the debates, something needs to change. Otherwise, the Republican primary debates may continue to be a lackluster show that fails to capture the attention of the American public.
