Report: Trump’s Ex-Chief of Staff to Betray Former President, Self-Preservation Mode Activated
A New Report: Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows Lays Groundwork to Convict Trump
In a stunning development, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows is reportedly working with Georgia prosecutors to build a case against former President Donald Trump. The charges include racketeering and conspiracy related to Trump’s challenge of the 2020 election.
The case has already led to the indictment of nineteen individuals, including Trump himself. Speculation is rife that many of the indicted individuals will strike deals with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.
“History has shown the 18 co-defendants that Donald doesn’t care about anyone but himself,” former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen said.
“I suspect it will be every defendant for himself,” Cohen added.
During court proceedings, Meadows indirectly implicated Trump in a crucial phone call with Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on January 2, 2021. Although Meadows arranged the call, his lawyer emphasized that Meadows had a limited speaking role.
“There’s a lot of statements by Mr. Trump. Mr. Meadows’ speaking roles were quite limited,” said Michael Francisco, Meadow’s lawyer.
“He didn’t make a request that you change the vote totals — Mr. Meadows, himself?” Francisco asked.
“Correct,” Raffensperger testified.
However, relying on the phone call as evidence in the trial could prove challenging. According to a transcript from The Washington Post, Trump’s actual words were: “I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state.”
If Meadows decides to turn on Trump, he won’t be the only defendant to do so. Attorney Scott Weinberg believes that strategically, being tried alongside Trump would divert attention away from the lesser players.
“Strategically speaking, if you are one of the lesser important players, you would definitely want to be in the same trial with Donald Trump. All of the focus is going to be on him,” Weinberg explained.
“They don’t want the little guys, they want Trump. You’re always compared to who you’re next to,” he added.
David Shafer, the Republican Party chair in Georgia during the 2020 election, has already implicated Trump in the case.
“Mr. Shafer and the other Republican Electors in the 2020 election acted at the direction of the incumbent president and other federal officials,” Shafer’s lawyers wrote in a court filing last month.
“Attorneys for the president and Mr. Shafer specifically instructed Mr. Shafer, verbally and in writing, that the Republican electors’ meeting and casting their ballots on December 14, 2020, was consistent with counsels’ advice and was necessary to preserve the presidential election contest,” the filing stated.
Meadows revealed that the Trump electors were preparing for a court victory that never materialized.
“What I didn’t want to happen was for the campaign to prevail in court action and not have this” lined up, Meadows explained.
“Why?” prosecutor Anna Cross asked him.
“Because I knew I’d be yelled at by the president of the United States,” he replied.
Legal experts predict that Trump may attempt to shield himself and his co-defendants with claims of broad presidential immunity.
“Eventually, Trump is going to assert broad presidential immunity, and everyone else is going to ride under his authority,” attorney William Shipley warned.
In an Op-Ed for the Los Angeles Times, Harry Litman speculates that Meadows is seeking immunity by transferring his case to federal court and invoking the Supremacy Clause. This argument asserts that federal law supersedes state law, thereby preventing Meadows from being charged with a Georgia crime.
As this high-stakes legal battle unfolds, it remains to be seen how Meadows’ cooperation and potential testimony will impact the case against Trump and his co-defendants.
