Trump’s stance on transgender issues has drastically evolved over time.
Former President Trump Takes a Stand Against Gender Ideology
Former President Trump is making a bold promise to “defeat the cult of gender ideology” as he sets his sights on a second term in the White House. This contentious issue has the potential to shape the outcome of the 2024 presidential election.
Interestingly, Trump’s stance on gender identity has not always been consistent. Just over a decade ago, he endorsed the participation of a transgender woman in the Miss Universe pageant, stating that the contest should be open to individuals who identify as women.
“This is a young woman, who, according to the laws of Canada, and according to the laws of the United States, is allowed to enter the pageant system,” Trump said. “Let her run, and maybe she’ll win. And I think I made the right decision.”
In 2016, Trump also spoke out against North Carolina’s “bathroom bill,” which prohibited men from using women’s bathrooms.
“Leave it the way it is,” Trump stated. “There have been very few complaints the way it is. People go, they use the bathroom that they feel is appropriate, there has been so little trouble.”
The issue of gender theory has become a highly debated topic in the 2024 presidential race, encompassing areas such as education, parenting, sports, and culture. While many on the Left support the idea of gender fluidity and even endorse irreversible procedures for children, the crowded GOP primary field, including Trump, generally opposes these controversial claims.
“No serious country should be telling its children that they were born with the wrong gender,” Trump emphasized. “We will defeat the cult of gender ideology to reassert that God created two genders, male and female.”
It is worth noting that Trump has been on both sides of the issue in the past. During his presidency, he faced criticism from the LGBTQ community for reversing Obama-era rules that protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. He was also accused of erasing transgender civil rights protections and banning transgender individuals from serving in the military, a policy that was later reversed by President Joe Biden.
Trump’s closest rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has also taken a strong stance against sex-change procedures for minors, allowing biological boys and men to compete in female sports, and promoting radical gender theory in public schools. In fact, as early as June 1, 2021, DeSantis signed legislation prohibiting men and boys from participating in women’s sports at the high school and college level.
“In Florida, girls are going to play girls’ sports and boys are going to play boys’ sports,” DeSantis declared. “We’re going to make sure that that’s the reality. … The bill that we’re doing today will ensure fairness for women athletes for years to come in the state of Florida. … We’re going to go based off biology, not based off ideology when we’re doing sports.”
