Trump’s influence on the GOP and the impact of his endorsements on 2024 candidates.
Former President Donald Trump’s Endorsement: A Powerful Political Force
Former President Donald Trump’s endorsement carries significant political weight, often leading to victories for the candidates he supports. However, there have been instances where Trump-endorsed GOP hopefuls have faced losses. Nevertheless, Trump’s influence remains prominent in every election cycle, including the upcoming 2024 race.
Impressive Track Record
According to the Washington Post, the majority of Trump’s preferred candidates emerged victorious in their primary elections, with a staggering 224 out of 241 securing wins. Additionally, Ballotpedia reports that 216 out of 250 candidates endorsed by Trump made it onto the general election ballot. It is worth noting that many of these candidates were incumbents or running in non-competitive races.
“We got a lot of good, tough Republicans around that people are going to run against them, and people are going to win, and they’re going to get my endorsement every single time,” Trump proudly declared at a recent rally in Pennsylvania. “And they’re going to win because we win almost every race.”
Past Endorsements: Bold Choices and Mixed Results
In the 2022 midterm elections, Trump’s party experienced a lackluster performance despite his endorsement of over 200 candidates. The impact of Trump’s endorsement varies depending on the district, as Republican political strategist John Feehery explains: “In some districts, Trump’s endorsement is solid gold, and in other districts, it’s kryptonite.”
Key Wins
- In Wyoming, Rep. Liz Cheney lost to Trump-backed competitor Harriet Hageman. However, it is important to note that Cheney’s repudiation of Trump following the Capitol riot and 2020 election denial played a significant role in her defeat.
- In a crowded field for the Republican nomination for Senate in Ohio, Sen. JD Vance emerged victorious with 53% of the vote, defeating Democratic Rep. Tim Ryan. Despite previously expressing reservations about Trump, Vance embraced the former president during his primary campaign, ultimately appealing to swing voters and securing the GOP seat.
- Freshman Sen. Ted Budd rode a Trump endorsement to victory, defeating his Democratic challenger Cheri Beasley for the outgoing GOP Sen. Richard Burr’s seat in a closely contested race.
- Rep. Lauren Boebert, a staunch Trump loyalist, successfully won her bid for reelection against Democrat Adam Frisch.
Key Losses
- In a highly anticipated Senate race, Sen. John Fetterman defeated Trump-backed Dr. Mehmet Oz, marking a significant loss for the former president. Fetterman’s victory in areas where Trump had previously enjoyed double-digit margins suggests that Trump’s endorsement did not carry the same weight in this particular race.
- Sen. Lisa Murkowski, despite facing a primary defeat, managed to secure victory through a write-in campaign, becoming only the second person in history to achieve this feat. Despite her break from party lines and Trump’s endorsement of another GOP candidate, Murkowski garnered around 53% of the vote.
- In Georgia, former University of Georgia football star Herschel Walker, supported by Trump, headed to a runoff against incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock. Despite early polling indicating a promising outcome for Walker, conservative voters did not turn out in sufficient numbers, resulting in a victory for Warnock.
Current Endorsements: Trump’s Continued Influence
Trump’s influence within the current Republican party remains significant, as evidenced by his towering lead in the polls over the eleven other Republicans who have announced their candidacies for the 2024 presidential race.
Republican candidates vying for Senate and House seats continue to express their support for the former president, despite his ongoing legal battles. However, it is important to note that Trump’s reciprocation of these endorsements is not guaranteed.
Current Endorsements
While it is still early in the campaign, Trump has already thrown his support behind Rep. Jim Banks for the Senate seat held by Sen. Mike Braun, who is running for Indiana governor in 2024. Banks expressed his pride in receiving Trump’s endorsement, stating that he will never let his supporters down.
Trump is also expected to officially endorse Gov. Jim Justice, who is competing for Sen. Joe Manchin’s position in West Virginia. Justice, who endorsed Trump for president in 2020, remains a popular governor with a strong approval rating.
Republicans are hopeful of flipping a critical Senate seat in Ohio and have thrown their support behind Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose. However, reports suggest that LaRose has downplayed the significance of Trump’s support behind closed doors.
As Feehery aptly puts it, “Most of the time, you’d rather have Trump with you than against you, but that’s not true in every district.” Trump’s preference for winners remains the most crucial factor in his endorsement decisions.
