Tuberville follows through with threat to block Pentagon appointments following abortion access push
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). He followed through on his threat to stop Department of Defense In response to an attempt by the Pentagon for women to have access to abortion, nominations were received.
DOD’s new policy, which pays for time and travel for women who have had an abortion, was implemented on February 16. This policy was initially announced in an Oct.20 memo. Tuberville argued Apart from moral objections the Pentagon’s action was illegally expanding the authority of the department, and he threatened block any DOD officer nominees or promotions.

Tuberville’s action would not only slow down and delay the nominating process, but it could also make the whole thing more complicated, possibly resulting in hundreds of unnecessary nominations. The senator followed through on his threat, and blocked the latest round of Pentagon nominations.
“I’m holding DOD nominations because the secretary of defense is trying to push through a massive expansion of taxpayer-subsidized abortions without going through this body, without going through Congress,” Tuberville stated this on the Senate floor.
