Former Vice President Mike Pence Discusses Capitol Breach
Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with former Vice President Mike Pence about the events of January 6, 2021, when the Capitol was breached.
During the Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Carlson asked Pence if he believed the incident should be labeled an ”insurrection,” a term commonly used by mainstream media and Democratic officials.
“All I know for sure, having lived through it at the Capitol, is that it was a tragic day,”
said Pence, who oversaw the Joint Sessions of Congress before the protesters entered the Capitol building.
“I’ve never used the word insurrection, Tucker, over the past two years, but it was a riot that took place at the Capitol that day.”
Prior to the January 6 session, President Donald Trump and some of his allies urged Pence to reject the certification of then-President-elect Joe Biden. Pence’s decision not to do so drew criticism from Trump and his supporters, who believed Pence acted inappropriately.
Pence, however, maintained that he had no constitutional power to overturn the election results. He was quickly moved to safety before the protests escalated.
“I just think it was a tragic moment, without question,”
Pence told Carlson.
“But I have to tell you that seeing people assaulting law enforcement officers, smashing windows, breaking into the Capitol building, it infuriated me. And it’s very likely that the restraint that was shown by law enforcement officers saved lives that day.”
In addition, Pence expressed his belief that Trump’s comments on January 6 were inappropriate and potentially dangerous.
“I believe whatever his intentions in that moment, it endangered me and my family and everyone that was at the Capitol that day,”
he said.
“I believe history will hold him accountable for that.”
When Pence launched his 2024 campaign for the Republican nomination, he stated that he believes Trump’s statements on January 6 should disqualify him from holding office again. However, Pence’s popularity in polls has remained relatively low, currently hovering around 5 percent support.
Tucker Carlson Questions Pence on Ukraine Support
During the interview, Carlson also pressed Pence on his stance regarding Ukraine’s war effort against Russia. Pence reiterated his belief that it is in the best interest of the United States to support the Kyiv government.
