Tulsi Gabbard Grills George Santos Over False Claims: ‘Do You Have No Shame?’
Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard grilled Rep.-elect George Santos of New York during a Fox News interview this week after Santos’ alleged falsehoods about his background came to light and he admitted to fabricating aspects of his past.
Gabbard, now an Independent and a Fox News contributor, interviewed Santos while guest hosting Tucker Carlson’s show.
“The thing is, Congressman-elect, integrity means, yes, carrying yourself with honor, but it means — it means telling the truth, being a person of integrity,” Gabbard spoke. “And if I were one of those in New York’s 3rd district right now, now that the election is over, and I’m finding out all of these lies that you’ve told — not just one little lie or one little embellishment — these are blatant lies.”
“My question is, do you have no shame?” Gabbard pressed.
“This is not — this is not about the Democratic Party, though,” Gabbard replied. “This is about your relationship frankly, with the people who’ve entrusted you to go and fight for them.”
TULSI GABBARD, FOX NEWS HOST: Now, permanent Washington has created a culture where it’s acceptable to lie to further your own interest. Try not to be caught. It’s not hard to believe that I served eight years in Congress.
People just shrug and go on, even when politicians get caught. No big deal, no consequences.
A few examples: Dick Blumenthal lied to the public about his military service. Elizabeth Warren also lied about Native American heritage.
So, no one should be surprised that the American people don’t trust these politicians. They’ve got no faith that those in Washington are actually working for the people when they’re so clearly working for themselves.
New allegations have surfaced that George Santos, the New York Congressman who was elected recently, has been extensively lying about his past. These deceptions are now admitted by Santos.
For example, Santos acknowledges that he, quote, embellished his resume by saying that he graduated from Baruch College — but he didn’t. Santos has also admitted that he didn’t work for Citigroup or Goldman Sachs despite the fact that his website stated so.
Santos also once described himself as a proud Jew. Santos, however, stated that he is now Catholic in an interview with The New York Post. I claimed I was Jewish because I learned that my maternal grandparents were Jewish.
There are many other allegations. We now have the chance to hear directly from George Santos. This is his first television interview since these allegations surfaced.
George Santos joins us now.
We are grateful to Congressman-elect Santos for being here today.
Now that you have seen all of the above, I want to ask you one question: What does the word mean? “integrity” What does that mean to you?
REP.-ELECTGEORGE SANOS (R-NY),: Tulsi, I’m glad you had me.
You know, to answer your question — integrity is very important. And like I said to the New York Post, embellishment my resume was a mistake —
(CROSSTALK)
GABBARD: But what does it actually mean? What does it signify? Because it is crucial to understand the meaning of the word.
SANTOS : This means to conduct yourself in an honorable manner.
And I made a mistake. Tulsi, I believe humans are flawed and all of us make mistakes. We can all admit to having made mistakes at one time in our lives, I believe.
I’m having to admit this on national television for the whole country to see, and I have the courage to do so because I believe that in order to move past this and move forward and be an effective member of Congress, I have to face my mistakes. And I’m facing them.
It is a fact that I will continue to do everything I promised in my campaign. I’m not a fraud. I’m not a fake. I didn’t materialize from thin air.
My entire life, I have worked hard to get to where I am today. Life wasn’t easy. It didn’t start off easy. As I’ve said it many, many times, I come from abject poverty.
I’m sorry for my mistakes. And now, I want to put this past me —
GABBARD: The thing is —
SANTOS: — so I can deliver for the American people.
GABBARD: The thing is, Congressman-elect, integrity means, yes, carrying yourself with honor, but it means — it means telling the truth, being a person of integrity.
SANTOS, of course.
GABBARD: And if I were one of those in New York’s 3rd district right now, now that the election is over, and I’m finding out all of these lies that you’ve told — not just one little lie or one little embellishment — these are blatant lies.
My question is, do you have no shame? Do you have no shame in the people who —
SANTOS: Well —
GABBARD: — are now
