‘Strippers’ Union Soars in California with ‘Twerking Class Heroes’ Title’
Strippers’ Unionization: A Victory for Democracy, Says Union Head
A group of strippers in California is making history by forming the first strippers’ union in the United States in a decade. The “Twerking Class Heroes,” as they call themselves, were fired in 2022 after protesting over safety concerns at the Star Garden Topless Dive Bar in North Hollywood, which has since closed its doors. Now, the owners of the club are expected to negotiate with the strippers, who will be represented by the show business union Actor’s Equity Association.
A Big Day for Dancers Everywhere
“I’m excited that all of my beautiful coworkers will finally have a seat at the table and a voice to discuss safety and other issues,” said Sinder, a dancer at the facility. “This is a big day for us and dancers everywhere.”
The last known strippers’ union was at a club in San Francisco that shuttered in 2013. The Star Garden Topless Dive Bar is hoping to reopen within two months after resolving a bankruptcy case.
A Victory for Democracy
Kate Shindle, president of the Actors’ Equity Association, hailed the strippers’ unionization as a victory for democracy. “I’m thrilled that we’ve won recognition of their rights to safety and democracy in the workplace and representation at the bargaining table,” Shindle said.
“Star Garden decided to settle, as it has always been a fair and equal opportunity employer that respects the rights of its employees,” said An Nguyen Ruda, attorney for the club.
Benefits of Unionization
Unionization can provide numerous benefits for workers, including:
- Collective bargaining power
- Improved working conditions
- Increased job security
- Access to benefits and protections
By forming a union, the “Twerking Class Heroes” have taken a significant step towards improving their working conditions and ensuring their voices are heard. This is a win for democracy and a win for workers’ rights.
