Two bodies discovered entangled in Abbott’s Rio Grande border buoys.
AUSTIN, Texas — Tragic Discovery in the Rio Grande
Two lifeless bodies, believed to be immigrants attempting to cross from Mexico to the United States, were found entangled in a series of buoys installed by Governor Greg Abbott’s administration in the river.
The Texas Department of Public Safety alerted the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass about the first body discovered in the southern part of the floating barriers. The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement confirming the incident.
Statement from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) notified the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass that a lifeless body was found caught in the southern part of the buoys installed in the Rio Grande River at approximately 2:35 p.m.”
Mexican authorities retrieved the body from the water, but the cause of death and nationality remain unknown.
Another body was later discovered in the buoys, but details regarding the person’s identity and cause of death have yet to be determined, according to ABC News. The Mexican government has not commented on the second death.
The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over the installation of the barriers, considering them a violation of their sovereignty.
Statement from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
“We are deeply concerned about the impact on the human rights and safety of migrants caused by these state policies, which contradict the close collaboration between our country and the federal government of the United States. We will continue to closely monitor the situation through the Mexican Consulate in Eagle Pass and maintain contact with the relevant authorities in Mexico and the United States to gather more information and request thorough investigations.”
The governor’s office and DPS have not provided any comments on the matter.
