Three countries in northern South America account for most of the cocaine in the world: Colombia and Peru.
Colombia produces the highest amount of cocaine among the three countries. A 2017 estimate suggested that 460,000 acres of Colombia were cultivating coca plants. This is a much greater number than when Pablo Escobar was the Medellin Cartel’s notorious drug kingpin. The Washington Post.
Colombia has a high production of cocaine. “unpicked coca leaves are rotting in the fields,” The report stated.
“We’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Luis Carlos Villegas, Colombia’s defense minister.
In Colombia’s mangrove swamps, drug cartels often build semi-submersible and submarine craft. The vessel can be built for $1-2 million and is often used once by crew members to transport hundreds of thousands of dollars of cocaine to their destination. The crew usually disposes of the drugs once they have been removed from the vessel.
