Two migrant caravans may unite to reach the US.
Two Migrant Caravans May Join Together in Bid to Reach US
Excitement is building as two large migrant caravans could potentially merge on their journey to the United States. According to Reuters, hundreds of migrants have left southern Mexico with hopes of joining another caravan consisting of thousands further north. The surge in illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border has been a significant challenge under the Biden administration.
The migrants come from various countries including Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela.
“I think 3.4 months is too long to wait to get a humanitarian visa, to be able to travel through Mexican territory,” expressed Venezuelan Selma Alvarez. “Because we are at the mercy of coyotes, of criminals, it is good that we accompany each other in the caravan, it seems safer to me.”
The smaller caravan is attempting to utilize CBP One, a phone application provided by the Biden administration that allows migrants to book entry appointments at ports along the southern border. Alvarez added that the group had grown impatient.
According to federal data, Border Patrol has recorded over 2.2 million illegal migrant encounters at the southern border in fiscal year 2022 and more than 2 million in fiscal year 2023. The number of migrants who successfully entered the U.S. after crossing illegally has even surpassed the populations of 11 states in fiscal year 2023.
Former Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma sector in Arizona, Chris Clem, recently informed the Daily Caller News Foundation that fiscal year 2024 is on track to potentially witness another record year of illegal immigration. Preliminary data obtained by the DCNF revealed that Border Patrol encountered nearly 200,000 migrants crossing illegally nationwide in October.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to a request for comment.

Why are the migrants choosing to join forces and merge their caravans when seeking safety in the United States?
Etween October 2021 and October 2022, there were more than 1.7 million encounters at the U.S.-Mexico border. This surge in illegal immigration has overwhelmed the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and has become a significant challenge for the Biden administration.
The decision of these migrants to join forces in their journey to the United States is not surprising given the current circumstances. The long wait times to obtain humanitarian visas and the dangers they face from criminals and human smugglers have pushed these individuals to seek safety in numbers. By merging the two caravans, they hope to increase their chances of reaching the United States safely.
The migrants come from various countries, highlighting the wide range of challenges and crises that have driven people to leave their homes. The political, economic, and social instability in Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, and Venezuela have forced many to flee in search of a better life.
The smaller caravan, frustrated by delays in the process of obtaining entry appointments through the CBP One app, has decided to take matters into their own hands. The CPB One app, provided by the Biden administration, was intended to streamline the entry process and reduce wait times. However, the reality on the ground has not lived up to expectations. The migrants have grown impatient, and as a result, have chosen to join forces with another caravan that is further ahead in the journey.
This merging of caravans poses additional challenges for both the migrants and the U.S. authorities. The influx of a larger group of migrants could further strain the already overwhelmed CBP resources and facilities. Additionally, the Biden administration will face even greater scrutiny and pressure to address the ongoing immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.
While there are no guarantees that these migrants will reach their desired destination, their determination and resilience are evident. The hardships they have endured on their journey, including dangerous border crossings and uncertain futures, highlight the dire circumstances that have compelled them to undertake this perilous journey.
It is essential to recognize the complexities and underlying issues that drive mass migration. Addressing the root causes of displacement, such as poverty, violence, and political instability, is crucial in creating long-term solutions for both the migrants and the countries they are fleeing from.
As the two caravans potentially merge, the eyes of the world will be on the United States and its response to this challenging situation. The Biden administration, in coordination with international partners, must prioritize the protection and well-being of these migrants while also addressing the border security concerns that this influx poses.
Ultimately, the merging of these caravans reflects the deep desperation and determination of individuals seeking a better life. It is a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by migrant communities worldwide and the urgent need for comprehensive and humane immigration policies to address these dire situations.
