Two Proud Boys Members Sentenced to Over 15‌ Years in Prison ‌for Capitol ‍Riot

Two members of the Proud Boys were handed down significant prison sentences on Thursday for their involvement in the U.S. Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

Joseph Biggs, a former leader of the group, received a staggering‍ 17-year‌ sentence after being convicted of seditious ⁤conspiracy and other charges. District Judge Timothy Kelly ​emphasized the importance of ‍the rights protected by the Constitution and the significance of ‌the peaceful transfer of power,​ stating that‌ the‌ events ​on January⁣ 6 broke this tradition.

“The nature ‌of the constitutional ⁣moment we were in that day is something that is so sensitive that it deserves a significant‍ sentence,”‌ Judge Kelly said.

Biggs,‌ a 38-year-old U.S. Army veteran, was found guilty of ⁢multiple charges, including seditious conspiracy,​ obstruction of an official⁣ proceeding, and destruction of​ government property.

During his sentencing hearing, Biggs reportedly admitted his mistake on January 6, claiming that he was influenced by ⁣the crowd ​and ⁤his curiosity got the better of him.

“I know that I messed up that day, but I am not a terrorist,”‍ Biggs said.

Another former Proud Boys leader, Zachary Rehl, was also sentenced to 15 ‌years in prison. ⁣Rehl was⁢ found guilty of‌ obstructing an official proceeding, conspiring ‍to obstruct an official proceeding, and other charges. During the trial, he committed perjury by lying about⁤ assaulting police officers, but video evidence proved otherwise.

Rehl expressed that ⁤he fell ‌for the lies spread by politicians about the⁤ election, stating that he believed‌ them “hook, line, and sinker.”

Both Biggs and Rehl stood trial alongside other Proud Boy members, with ‍most of them being convicted of seditious conspiracy. Sentencing for the remaining defendants will take place in the coming days.

According to The Associated Press, over ​1,100 individuals have been charged with Capitol ⁤riot-related federal crimes, with a significant number pleading⁤ guilty or being convicted at trial.
