A United States Air Force member tragically lost his life after setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. as a powerful protest against the Israel-Hamas conflict.
Officials have confirmed that Aaron Bushnell, a 25-year-old U.S. Air Force member from San Antonio, Texas, tragically passed away after setting himself on fire outside the Israeli Embassy in D.C.
The Metropolitan Police Department responded to the incident on International Drive around 1:00 pm on Sunday, providing assistance to the Secret Service.
In a disturbing video posted online, Bushnell, dressed in his military uniform, passionately shouted “Free Palestine” and identified himself as an active air force soldier. He set himself on fire while repeatedly chanting the phrase, remaining engulfed in flames for nearly a minute before law enforcement extinguished the fire.
Bushnell approached the Israeli Embassy and live-streamed the event on Twitch, a popular video streaming website. However, the video was taken down an hour later after being reported.
“I will no longer be complicit in genocide [in Gaza]. I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest,” Bushnell allegedly said, before drenching himself with an unknown liquid and setting himself on fire while repeatedly yelling “Free Palestine.”
Prior to his tragic act of self-immolation, Bushnell posted his final words on Facebook, expressing his belief that people are currently complicit in acts of injustice and oppression.
“Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now,” he wrote on Facebook.
Bushnell was an active member of the U.S. Air Force, but no further information has been provided. The Israeli Embassy confirmed that he was “unknown” to them, and no embassy employees were harmed during the incident.
Authorities dispatched an explosive device disposal unit to the location due to a suspicious car and driver potentially related to Bushnell. However, no dangerous items were found.
The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the report of a person on fire outside the embassy, but the fire had already been extinguished by Secret Service agents.
Pro-Palestinian activists have chosen the embassy as a protest location, demanding an end to the Israeli military assault in Gaza. Some supporters have controversially suggested prioritizing Palestinian lives over the release of Israeli and American hostages held in Gaza.
This incident follows the cross-border assaults by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas on October 7th, 2023, which resulted in the capture of over 200 hostages and the loss of 1,200 lives.
