US Convoy Attacked in Nigeria: 4 Killed, 3 Kidnapped
What Happened?
According to CNN, a United States convoy was attacked in Nigeria’s southeastern Anambra state this week. The assailants reportedly killed two police operatives and two staff of the US consulate, and kidnapped three people. The incident occurred in the town of Atani, approximately 40 miles away from the state capital. Local officials have blamed separatists for the attack, who want to start their own country and whose leader is currently on trial for terrorism.
Were Americans Involved?
John Kirby, spokesman for the U.S. National Security Council, confirmed that none of those who were killed were Americans. Local police officials also told CNN that no Americans were even in the convoy. The U.S. State Department emphasized that the security of their personnel is always paramount and that they take extensive precautions when organizing trips to the field.
Who is Responsible?
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack by any groups. However, Islamic terrorism is prevalent throughout Nigeria and the entire continent of Africa.
Separate Attack in Plateau State
In a separate attack on Tuesday, attackers killed at least 30 people in Nigeria’s central Plateau state. Most of the victims were described as women and children.
