NBC News reports that the United States Marshals Service (USMS), suffered a serious security breach on February 17. The attackers gained access to sensitive data including administrative data and legal process returns. Ransomware and data theft were involved in the attack on a USMS system. The incident is being investigated by the Justice Department.
Drew Wade, spokesperson for USMS, stated that the compromised system contained sensitive information to law enforcement about the subjects of USMS investigations and certain USMS employees. Wade stated: “The affected system contains law enforcement sensitive information, including returns from legal process, administrative information, and personally identifiable information pertaining to subjects of USMS investigations, third parties, and certain USMS employees.”
