Historic Moment: United States Lands on the Moon After 50 Years
On Thursday, a robotic spacecraft called the Odysseus made history by becoming the first U.S. spacecraft to land on the lunar surface since 1972. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone for space exploration, as it is also the first commercial vehicle to accomplish this feat from any country.
The Odysseus lander, standing at an impressive 14 feet tall, was developed by Intuitive Machines, a pioneering private space company based in Houston, Texas. This groundbreaking mission was accomplished through a partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
After being launched from Earth on February 15th with the assistance of a SpaceX rocket, the spacecraft successfully entered lunar orbit on Wednesday.
Prior to its landing near the Malapert A crater, approximately 185 miles north of the moon’s south pole, the Odysseus mission encountered an unexpected challenge with its navigation system. During the self-controlled landing, it was discovered that the “aa laser instrument” on the spacecraft, designed to provide altitude and velocity data, was not functioning.
As a result, the spacecraft had to complete an additional orbit around the moon before finally touching down.
While it has been confirmed that the Odysseus is now on the lunar surface and operational, no information regarding its condition has been released at this time.
