Former Iranian official, boasting about attempts to kill American leaders, invited by U.S. Strategic Command.
Hussein Mousavian headlined STRATCOM’s Deterrence Symposium
Prepare to be shocked! U.S. military leaders recently welcomed a controversial guest to their prestigious event. Hussein Mousavian, a former member of Iran’s nuclear negotiating team and current Middle East security and nuclear policy specialist at Princeton University, was chosen by U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM) to headline its 2023 Deterrence Symposium. This high-level gathering brought Mousavian face-to-face with America’s top military brass.
The news of Mousavian’s appearance at the symposium, which was revealed after STRATCOM shared a video of the event, has sparked criticism from former U.S. officials and Iran experts. They question why the leading military organization in the U.S. would host someone with close ties to the Islamic Republic.
“The decision to invite former Iranian ambassador Mousavian to speak to STRATCOM is unimaginably foolish,” said Gabriel Noronha, a former Iran adviser at the State Department. “He is a pawn and propaganda agent of the Iranian regime, which explains why he is allowed to travel back to Iran.”
Noronha pointed out that Mousavian remains closely connected to the Iranian regime, with former foreign minister Javad Zarif stating in 2016 that Mousavian “continues to work hard” for Tehran’s interests while at Princeton. Noronha called for a congressional investigation into the decision-making process that led to this inappropriate invitation.
Mousavian’s presence at Princeton has long been a source of concern for Iranian dissidents due to his alleged involvement in human rights crimes during his time as Iran’s ambassador. Furthermore, last year, Mousavian seemed to revel in Iran’s death threats against former Trump administration officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and his deputy, Brian Hook.
Advocacy groups like United Against a Nuclear Iran have criticized Mousavian for his apparent delight in the threats posed by Iran to former American officials. It remains to be seen how STRATCOM will respond to these concerns.
Ali Nader, a veteran Iran scholar based in Washington, D.C., expressed outrage and concern over the invitation, stating that it is “outrageous and dangerous” for U.S. STRATCOM to invite a former regime official connected to the assassination of Iranian dissidents to speak at its symposium, granting him access to America’s most senior military officials.
