A Washington, ‌D.C., Uber driver’s harrowing escape from danger

A Washington, D.C., Uber driver⁢ who fled Iraq found himself in the midst of a terrifying incident⁣ on the streets of the nation’s capital ​over the weekend.

The incident took place near the Cathedral ⁤of St. Matthew the Apostle, ​a bustling⁤ area known for its office buildings and popular⁤ nightclubs.

A brush with danger

Omar al Furaiji was ⁤driving two passengers when bullets suddenly​ rained down on their car, shattering the windshield.

Alarming footage captured by a ‍dashboard ‌camera was shared on X,⁤ the social ⁢media platform ‍formerly known as Twitter, and quickly went viral.

The video shows ⁢al Furaiji and his passengers instinctively ducking for cover as gunshots rang out behind them.

“It’s like something out‍ of a movie,” al Furaiji said. “Time seemed to stand still. I can’t even put it into words.”

The identities of​ the⁢ shooters and their motives remain unknown.

A​ miraculous escape

Tragically, at least ⁣one person lost their life in the shooting. As for al Furaiji, who had fled Iraq to escape war, he sustained injuries from shattered glass.

“I am grateful to God for my survival because ⁣it was an incredibly close call,” he said. “I still can’t believe I made it out⁢ alive. When I watched the video later on, ⁢I kept looking at myself, ​searching for any signs of ⁢injury, just trying to convince myself⁤ that I’m really here. Somehow, God saved me.”

Several other vehicles were also damaged in the shooting.
