Uber plans to improve driver safety amid national carjacking surge

Uber‌ Enhances Safety Measures to ⁤Protect Drivers

Uber Technologies, the renowned ride-sharing company with a vast network of ⁤over 6.5 million drivers and couriers worldwide, has recently‌ announced its commitment to‌ bolstering safety features. The company aims⁣ to safeguard drivers against the alarming rise in carjackings and violent attacks by implementing a rider identity verification process.

Enhanced ⁢Rider Identity Verification

“Next⁤ year, we will significantly expand ‌verification of rider identities to compare ⁣rider account details‌ against trusted data sources or an ID document.⁤ Over ‌time, we will inform ‍drivers whether they’re picking up a verified rider, so⁣ they can‌ have⁢ more peace of mind before accepting a trip request. This is on top of our ⁣existing⁢ verification process for ⁢riders who use certain anonymous payment methods,” the company stated.

Operating in more than 10,000 cities worldwide, Uber plans to ⁣introduce⁤ the “Record My Ride” feature to additional cities, providing drivers with an added layer of⁣ security.

Record My Ride Feature

“We’re expanding⁤ the Record My Ride pilot to⁣ iOS drivers in a dozen US cities,” Uber revealed.

The company further explained, “Record My Ride allows drivers to record⁢ video of trips using their smartphone’s front-facing camera, without the ⁢need to invest in a separate dashcam. Similar to the in-app audio recording feature we rolled out nationwide earlier this⁢ year, we built Record My Ride with privacy in mind: every recording is encrypted and⁤ stored directly on drivers’ devices, and nobody — not Uber, not riders, not drivers — can ‍access it unless a driver chooses to send it to us for ⁤review.”

Carjackings have surged ‌by a⁢ staggering ‍104% this year in Washington, D.C., according to ⁣the FBI. Disturbingly, even prominent figures‍ like Rep. Henry Cuellar⁢ (D-TX) have fallen⁤ victim to car thefts and carjackings.

Concerns about‌ carjackings extend beyond rideshare workers, as evidenced by a recent incident involving a‌ Secret Service agent protecting President Joe Biden’s ⁤granddaughter in Washington,⁤ D.C.

Meanwhile,⁤ car thefts in‍ Washington have skyrocketed⁢ by ⁤98% compared to data⁢ from 2022, as reported by the Metropolitan Police‌ Department. The district has witnessed numerous cases of vehicle theft, including the theft of a University of ‌District of ⁤Columbia Police cruiser.

Law enforcement authorities are taking action to combat this surge in criminal activity. In Montgomery County, Maryland, police arrested 13 teenagers involved in⁣ carjackings and vehicle thefts. Additionally,⁢ police utilized helicopters and cruisers to track down a stolen Amazon ⁤delivery⁣ van ‌that had been taken from the District to Prince George’s County,‍ Maryland.

These incidents highlight the‌ urgent⁣ need for heightened security measures to protect⁢ drivers and prevent further carjackings and thefts. Uber’s initiatives, such as rider identity verification and the Record My Ride feature, demonstrate the company’s commitment to ensuring the safety and‌ well-being of its drivers.
