Ukraine announces capture of first North Korean soldiers fighting for Russia

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Saturday that Ukraine captured North Korean soldiers fighting for the Russians.

Zelensky, who has led the country through Russia’s continued invasion, said two North Korean soldiers were captured in the Kursk region of Russia, an area where Ukrainian forces have moved into. The soldiers were wounded and were transported to Kyiv for interrogation, Zelensky said on social media.

“This was not an easy task: Russian forces and other North Korean military personnel usually execute their wounded to erase any evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine,” Zelensky said.

“As with all prisoners of war, these two North Korean soldiers are receiving the necessary medical assistance,” he continued. “I have instructed the Security Service of Ukraine to grant journalists access to these prisoners. The world needs to know the truth about what is happening.”

North Korea is thought to have ordered more than 10,000 members of its Korean People’s Army to be deployed to the Kursk region of Russia to aid in the invasion of Ukraine.

The SBU, Ukraine’s internal intelligence agency, said one of the soldiers was captured on Thursday and that the duo were the first North Korean soldiers to be captured in Kursk. The agency said the captures provide “indisputable evidence of North Korea’s involvement in Russia’s war against our country.”

Notably, Moscow has not confirmed whether troops from North Korea have been fighting alongside Russian forces in Kursk.

Ukraine has been at war with Russia since the latter invaded Ukraine back in 2022. The United States has provided Ukraine with military assistance and funding, while the U.S. has sanctioned Russia for its aggression.
