Biden insists Ukraine must meet NATO’s standards.

Biden: Ukraine Will Not Get Fast Track to Join NATO

President Joe Biden made it clear on Saturday that Ukraine will not have an easy path to join NATO. Speaking after a campaign rally, Biden emphasized that Ukraine must meet the same standards as other NATO members.

The president acknowledged Ukraine’s ability to coordinate its military in defense against the Russian invasion but stressed the importance of meeting all the necessary requirements for full NATO membership.

The Russian invasion in February 2022 prompted a strong response from NATO, with increased military spending commitments from several member countries. Finland has already joined the alliance, and Sweden is in the process of applying.

Contrary to some reports, Biden clarified that he is not considering waiving the requirement for Ukraine to have a Membership Action Plan to join NATO.

Recently, leaders from approximately 50 nations gathered in Brussels to discuss Ukraine’s pressing needs at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group meeting. New aid packages were also announced following a meeting of defense leaders.

Despite these developments, the question of full NATO membership for Ukraine remains unresolved. Biden acknowledged Ukraine’s progress in demonstrating military coordination but highlighted the need for a secure and non-corrupt system that meets all NATO standards.

Biden expressed optimism that Ukraine can meet these requirements but emphasized that membership is not automatic.
