Under Their Noses: US Postal Worker Stole $24 Million in Checks in 4 Months, Feds Allege
US Postal Worker Accused of Stealing $24 Million in Checks in 4 Months
An employee with the United States Postal Service has been accused of a massive theft scheme, allegedly stealing checks worth at least $24 million from the postal service. The employee, Nakedra Shannon, colluded with two others to sell the stolen checks, according to prosecutors.
Shannon, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, worked for the postal service from March 2021 to July 2023. It is alleged that she began stealing checks towards the end of her employment. The charges of conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud and theft of government property have been filed against Shannon and her accomplices, Donnell Gardner and Desiray Carter, both residents of Charlotte.
In addition to the initial charges, Carter and Gardner face counts of possession of stolen mail, while Shannon faces additional counts of theft of mail by a postal employee.
The trio operated their scheme at a Charlotte postal processing and distribution center, stealing incoming and outgoing checks. The thefts occurred between April and July 2023. The stolen checks, totaling over $12 million, were allegedly sold on a Telegram channel called OG Glass House.
Furthermore, Shannon, Gardner, and Carter are accused of stealing over $8 million worth of U.S. Treasury checks. The Telegram channel, run by Carter under the username “SW1PER,” served as a platform for advertising the stolen checks. Gardner facilitated the transactions by sending the stolen checks to buyers.
The indictment states that the trio made “hundreds of thousands of dollars in criminal proceeds” from their illegal activities.
The investigation into the conspiracy was conducted by multiple agencies, including the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Shannon, Gardner, and Carter have been released on bond after their initial court appearances.
The charges carry severe penalties, with a maximum sentence of 30 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, five years’ imprisonment for theft by postal employees and possession of stolen mail, and ten years’ imprisonment for theft of government property.

The recent case of a United States Postal Service employee being accused of stealing checks worth at least $24 million has shocked the nation. Nakedra Shannon, along with her accomplices Donnell Gardner and Desiray Carter, allegedly colluded to sell the stolen checks, leading to charges of conspiracy to commit financial institution fraud and theft of government property.
Shannon, a resident of Charlotte, North Carolina, had been employed by the postal service from March 2021 to July 2023. It is believed that she started stealing checks towards the end of her employment. In addition to the initial charges, Carter and Gardner also face counts of possession of stolen mail, while Shannon faces additional counts of theft of mail by a postal employee.
The trio orchestrated their scheme at a Charlotte postal processing and distribution center, targeting incoming and outgoing checks. The thefts took place between April and July 2023, with the stolen checks amounting to over $12 million. These checks were reportedly sold on a Telegram channel named OG Glass House.
The indictment reveals that Shannon, Gardner, and Carter are also accused of stealing over $8 million worth of U.S. Treasury checks. Carter allegedly ran the Telegram channel under the username “SW1PER,” using it to advertise the stolen checks. Gardner played a facilitator role, sending the stolen checks to buyers.
According to the indictment, the trio made “hundreds of thousands of dollars in criminal proceeds” from their illicit activities. The investigation into the conspiracy involved multiple agencies, including the U.S.
However, the charges they face come with severe penalties. If convicted, they could face up to 30 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy to commit bank fraud, five years’ imprisonment for theft by postal employees and possession of stolen mail, and ten years’ imprisonment for theft of government property.
Cases like this are a reminder of the importance of trust and integrity in our postal system. The United States Postal Service plays a crucial role in delivering items of value, such as checks, across the country. Incidents of internal theft not only compromise the trust of the public but also reflect poorly on the employees who work diligently to provide reliable service.
It is commendable that law enforcement agencies worked collaboratively to uncover this theft scheme. The comprehensive investigation carried out by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the IRS Criminal Investigation Division, the U.S. Department of Treasury Bureau of the Fiscal Service, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department demonstrates their commitment to upholding the law and maintaining the integrity of the postal service.
As this case moves forward, it is essential that justice is served. The stolen funds must be recovered, and appropriate measures must be put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The United States Postal Service must reevaluate its internal security protocols to ensure the trust and confidence of the American people are upheld.
In conclusion, the alleged theft of $24 million in checks by a United States Postal Service employee is a shocking occurrence that demands justice and accountability. It serves as a reminder of the importance of integrity and the need for continuous efforts to protect the trust of the public in the postal system. By addressing such incidents promptly and thoroughly, we can work towards maintaining a reliable and trustworthy postal service for all.
