Upcoming Harry Potter Video Game Will Reportedly Allow Players To Be Transgender
An upcoming video game based on the “Harry Potter” series will reportedly allow gamers to play as a transgender character.
“Hogwarts Legacy,” which is slated for a 2022 release from publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Inc. and developer Avalanche Software, will let players create a character who can have a masculine or feminine voice regardless of how the character looks, according to sources who spoke to Bloomberg.
Players will also choose whether they wish to play as a “witch” or a “wizard,” a choice that will determine which dorm their character lands in, as well as how other characters in the game refer to them.
Members of the game’s development team moved to add the transgender option in an effort “to make the game as inclusive as possible, pushing for the character customization and even for a transgender character to be added,” Bloomberg reported. “There was resistance from management at first, the people familiar with the project said, but currently the character customization is included in the game. A Warner Bros. spokesperson declined to comment.”
“Hogwarts Legacy” faced another controversy last month when Troy Leavitt, a senior producer at Salt Lake City-based Avalanche, was revealed to have made YouTube videos against feminism and in support of Gamergate. ResetEra, a large and influential forum about video games, banned threads promoting “Hogwarts Legacy” in response.
“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling has repeatedly faced accusations of transphobia for comments she has made in recent years, even drawing condemnation from “Harry Potter” film stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. As The Daily Wire reported of Rowling’s opinions:
“Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling has taken another round of heat for her anti-transgender stance, something she has remained steadfast about for over a year now.
In a Twitter post on Saturday, the acclaimed author essentially said that the concept of transgenderism erases the struggles of women across the world.
“If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction,” Rowling tweeted, as reported by Fox News. “If sex isn’t real, the lived reality of women globally is erased. I know and love trans people, but erasing the concept of sex removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It isn’t hate to speak the truth.”
“The idea that women like me, who’ve been empathetic to trans people for decades, feeling kinship because they’re vulnerable in the same way as women – ie, to male violence – ‘hate’ trans people because they think sex is real and has lived consequences – is a nonsense,” she continued.

In another tweet, J.K. Rowling shared an article from Devex that used the phrase “people who menstruate” instead of the actual people who menstruate, namely, women.
“‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud? Opinion: Creating a more equal post-COVID-19 world for people who menstruate,” she tweeted.
