US aid to Ukraine may be contingent on success of upcoming counteroffensive
The fate of Ukraine hangs in the balance as the Biden administration continues to show support for the country in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The upcoming counteroffensive will be crucial in regaining Russian-occupied territory, but it won’t be an easy feat. President Zelensky has been requesting additional weapons, some of which the US has declined to provide.
While President Biden has promised to support Ukraine for as long as necessary, there are factions within both parties that want the US to either stop or start advocating for a resolution to end the war. However, Senate Armed Services Chairman Jack Reed believes that Ukraine’s success in the upcoming offensive could bolster support for continuing to arm them.
The leaked classified documents allegedly reveal that the US may not be expecting overwhelming success in the counteroffensive. This could lead to scrutiny for not providing Ukraine with fighter jets or long-range missiles, both of which Zelensky has requested.
Despite the challenges, the Biden administration has provided Ukraine with over $35 billion worth of military equipment and training. The success of the counteroffensive will be crucial in determining the future of Ukraine and its relationship with the US.
