US Attorney: Hunter Biden Probe Continues Despite Plea Deal
The Hunter Biden Investigation Continues Despite Plea Deal
The office of U.S. Attorney David Weiss has confirmed that the inquiry into Hunter Biden remains active, even after reaching a plea deal.
Ongoing Investigation
According to a statement from Weiss’ team on Tuesday, the investigation is still ongoing. The announcement revealed that Hunter Biden, 53, has been charged with two misdemeanor tax offenses and a felony firearm offense. However, he has agreed to plead guilty to the tax charges and enter a pretrial diversion agreement for the gun violation.
As part of the agreement, the Justice Department is expected to recommend probation for the tax charges, as reported by sources. If Biden complies with the terms of the pretrial agreement regarding the firearm offense, it is likely that the case will be expunged from his record.
Resolution or Not?
Biden’s attorney, Chris Clark, expressed his belief that the plea deal signifies the resolution of the years-long federal inquiry into his client. “With the announcement of two agreements between my client, Hunter Biden, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Delaware, it is my understanding that the five-year investigation into Hunter is resolved,” Clark stated.
However, critics quickly voiced their concerns and GOP lawmakers pledged to continue their investigations into the Biden family, casting doubt on the finality of the matter.
Potential Areas of Inquiry
One area that could still be subject to investigation is the Biden family’s foreign business dealings. Former Attorney General William Barr recently disclosed that he referred claims of a $5 million bribery scheme involving Joe and Hunter Biden to Delaware for further investigation.
Tax Violations and Firearm Charge
The tax violations stem from Hunter Biden’s failure to pay over $100,000 in federal income taxes for 2017 and 2018, despite earning more than $1.5 million in those years. Regarding the firearm charge, Weiss stated that Biden possessed a firearm despite being an unlawful user of and addicted to a controlled substance.
The arraignment between the parties still requires approval from a judge. If convicted, Biden could face a maximum penalty of 12 months in prison for each tax charge and up to 10 years in prison for the firearm charge, according to Weiss.
