US, Canada Reach Deal to Limit Entry at Unofficial Border Crossing Points
As U.S. President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met in Ottawa, Canada, for diplomatic meetings, the issue of the US-Canada border was hotly debated. On a busy March 24th, Joe Bden spoke to the American Parliament.
As of March 25, asylum seekers at illegal border crossing points between the two nations may be turned away, according to an announcement made by both officials. The action comes after decades of unofficial immigration requests for hospital made at locations like Roxham Road, which links New York State and the province of Quebec. In recent months, the migration rate had increased significantly.
The two nations share a boundary that is 5, 525 miles long, according to Biden.
Thousands of people cross the border every day, traveling north and south to play or simply to attend, knowing they will be welcomed warmly on the other side.
According to him,” Americans and Canadians are two men, two nations, sharing one brain.” No two countries on Earth are connected by such strong bonds— friendship, family, business, and cultures.
Trudeau cited former President Ronald Reagan, who referred to the U.S. – Canada border as” a meeting place rather than a dividing line” in 1987 before the Canadian Parliament.
Our borders is no longer even where we meet each some, according to Trudeau, more than 30 years ago. ” This is the location where we will meet the present and the future.”
Loophole
Biden and Trudeau announced a revision to the Safe Third Country Agreement between the two nations in order to address the problem of improper immigrant border crossings from the US into Canada. Canada announced the release and added that it will also permit 15, 000 refugees from the Western Hemisphere to apply for entry” on a humanitarian foundation.”
Trudeau had asked the Biden presidency for help in containing the influx of American immigrants seeking hospital into Canada.
The agreement will enable the two nations to detain immigrants who are stranded between official entry points along the U.S. – Canada border.
As per a 2002 pact between the two nations, asylum applicants may submit an application in the nation of their initial arrival.
This agreement only applied to official border crossings, opening a gap for immigrants who cross the border illegally from the United States to Canada at Roxham Road, which is accessed by vehicle from Plattsburgh, New York, vehicle station.
Members of Parliament were informed by Biden that” the United States and Canada may cooperate to fully implement the updated Safe Third Country Agreement and prevent illegal border bridges.”
Trudeau stated at the joint news conference that” Canada and the U.S. may continue to collaborate as companions to continue our people safer.” Keeping people safe also entails maintaining the security of our frontiers, our immigration system, and the safety of asylum seekers. Both of our nations support border security, refugee protection, safer, reasonable, and peaceful movement.
This is the reason we may just apply the Safe Third Country Agreement to people seeking asylum between authorized entry points. Officers and border guards will uphold the contract after nightfall tonight and transfer errant border crossers to the United States’ closest port of entry.
After meeting in Moscow with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, Biden and Trudeau met in Ottawa to discuss a collaboration that may aid in the creation of an international arrangement led by China and Russia.
Before the press conference, Biden and Trudeau issued a joint statement denouncing Russia for its illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war against Ukraine and [ noting that they ] will continue imposing economic costs on Russia while maintaining our unwavering support for Ukraine for as long as it takes.
The two officials added that” the People’s Republic of China poses a substantial long-term challenge to the international order, including like things like economic force, non-market policies and practices, and human rights abuses.”
The announcement reads,” While we will work with China in parts of shared interest, such as climate change, we remain committed to making sure we can effectively compete against China on an equal footing.” In order to combat foreign meddling in our societies that upholds our shared democratic values, Canada and the United States may also keep working together.
Trudeau was questioned during the press event,” Knowing what you know, are you okay with the idea of your kids or family using TikTok?”
In response, he said,” We made the same choice as the American government and others when we said that we don’t believe government-issued phones’ security profiles are secure.”
We have removed TikTok from government-issued mobile because of privacy and security concerns.
Trudeau grinned and said that exposure to TikTok will no longer be a problem for his kids now that they have government-issued apps.
