US launches strikes targeting Iranian proxy facilities in Iraq following ballistic missile attack
U.S. Conducts Airstrikes Against Iranian-Linked Targets in Iraq
The United States launched airstrikes against two facilities used by Iran and its proxies in Iraq on Wednesday morning. This marks the fourth planned strike by the U.S. military against Iranian-linked targets in Iraq and Syria. Over the past month, U.S. troops have faced more than 60 attacks from Tehran proxies.
Response to Attacks on U.S. and Coalition Forces
“On the morning of November 22 in Iraq, U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) forces conducted discrete, precision strikes against two facilities in Iraq,” stated U.S. Central Command. “The strikes were in direct response to the attacks against U.S. and Coalition forces by Iran and Iran-backed groups, including the one in Iraq on November 21, which involved the use of close-range ballistic missiles.”
These airstrikes were carried out in retaliation for a recent attack where proxy forces launched a close-range ballistic missile at the Al-Asad Air Base, injuring eight individuals. In response, a U.S. AC-130 gunship targeted a vehicle believed to be carrying militia members, resulting in their deaths.
Targeting the Responsible Militants
The AC-130 gunship targeted the militants because it was able to determine the origin of the close-range ballistic missile. Pentagon deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh explained, “So they were able to take action because they saw the militants, they were able to keep an eye on the movement of these militants as they moved into their vehicles, and that’s why they were able to respond.”
U.S. troops stationed in Iraq and Syria, with the objective of preventing the resurgence of ISIS, have faced an increasing number of attacks from Iranian-backed proxies in the past month. Since October 17, there have been approximately 66 attacks, resulting in over 60 reported injuries among U.S. troops, including traumatic brain injuries.

How are these airstrikes related to the recent drone attacks targeting U.S. personnel and facilities in the region?
-backed militia groups in eastern Syria and western Iraq on Sunday. These airstrikes were conducted in response to recent drone attacks targeting U.S. personnel and facilities in the region.
The airstrikes targeted weapons storage facilities and operational centers used by the Kata’ib Hezbollah (KH) and Kata’ib Sayyid al-Shuhada (KSS) militia groups, both of which have strong ties to Iran. According to U.S. officials, these groups have been responsible for multiple attacks against U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq, posing a significant threat to regional stability.
The U.S. military stated that the airstrikes were defensive in nature and aimed at deterring further attacks. They emphasized their commitment to protecting U.S. personnel and interests in the region, as well as supporting the Iraqi government in its efforts to maintain security and sovereignty within its borders.
The decision to conduct these airstrikes comes after a series of drone attacks targeting U.S. personnel and facilities in Iraq. One such attack occurred at Erbil International Airport in February, killing a civilian contractor and injuring several American contractors. Another attack targeted a military base housing U.S. forces in western Iraq, though no casualties were reported.
The U.S. has repeatedly condemned these attacks and has been clear that it will not hesitate to use force to defend its personnel and interests. President Joe Biden authorized the strikes, signaling a continuation of the U.S. approach toward Iranian-backed militia groups established under the previous administration.
Iran, on the other hand, has vehemently condemned these airstrikes and called them a violation of international law. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh stated that these actions would only escalate tensions in the region and undermine stability and security.
This latest escalation of tensions between the U.S. and Iran further complicates an already strained relationship. The U.S. and Iran have been engaged in a delicate diplomatic dance, with both sides expressing a willingness to return to the Iran nuclear deal but each demanding certain concessions from the other. These recent events may jeopardize the already fragile negotiations.
The airstrikes also highlight the continued influence of Iran in the region and the challenge it poses to U.S. interests. Iran’s support for militia groups in Iraq has allowed it to exert significant influence over the country’s politics and security. As a result, any actions taken against these militia groups must carefully consider the potential broader implications.
The long-term effects of these airstrikes remain to be seen. They may serve as a deterrent to future attacks, or they may further exacerbate tensions between the U.S. and Iran. As the situation unfolds, it is crucial for all parties involved to exercise restraint and seek diplomatic solutions to de-escalate the situation.
The U.S. airstrikes against Iranian-linked targets in Iraq highlight the complex and volatile nature of the region. They serve as a reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by the United States and its allies in the Middle East. Finding a sustainable and peaceful resolution to these conflicts will require continued dialogue, cooperation, and a commitment to regional stability.
