US Military Intercepts Foreign Drones Targeting American Troops: Report
Exciting news emerged on Wednesday as drone attacks aimed at American military personnel at air bases in Iraq were successfully thwarted.
According to The Associated Press, two drones were intercepted in an initial attack in western Iraq. The unnamed U.S. defense official confirmed the incident.
But the drama didn’t end there. “Hours later, an Iraqi militia announced it had launched another drone attack on a second base,” reported the AP.
However, the second attack was also foiled, as reported by Reuters. Thankfully, no injuries were reported in either incident.
The Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq claimed responsibility for both attacks and issued a warning of more “operations” against the so-called “American occupation,” according to the AP.
Middle East security analyst Seth Frantzman highlighted the significance of the situation, noting that Iran has a stockpile of kamikaze-type drones and has even supplied Russia, Hamas, and Hezbollah with drone technology.
Important. The Iran-backed militias in Iraq likely behind this attack (they have conducted numerous drone attacks, especially in 2021). Iran has many kamikaze-type drones, some it has exported to Russia; it also aided Houthis, Hamas, Hezbollah with drone tech. #DroneWars https://t.co/XHpwcvh1Qm

These attempted drone strikes mark the first such attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq in over a year, according to Reuters.
The al-Asad air base in Iraq was the target of the first attack, while the second attack aimed at the al-Harir air base in Erbil, the northern Iraqi city.
Reuters revealed that a lesser-known group called Tashkil al-Waritheen claimed responsibility for the second attack. This group is part of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, as reported by the AP.
These failed attacks come at a time of heightened tensions in the Middle East, with massive anti-Israeli and anti-American protests taking place in Iraq amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
