The US NTSB investigates engine fire on Boeing 737 MAX at Newark Airport.
Investigation Launched into Engine Fire on United Airlines Plane
By David Shepardson
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently investigating an engine fire that occurred on a Boeing 737-900 MAX plane operated by United Airlines at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.
The NTSB reported that a fire warning light indicator came on after United Airlines Flight 2376 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida landed at Newark on June 28. As a result, the crew shut down one of the engines.
Although there was no visible smoke or fire from the engine, maintenance personnel discovered evidence of a fuel leak, as well as heat damage and soot on the engine cases and external surfaces.
Passengers were able to safely exit the plane in Newark, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA stated that the flight crew activated the engine fire extinguishers as a precaution.
United Airlines is currently conducting its own investigation into the incident, while Boeing has referred all questions to the NTSB and United.
The engine in question was manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture between General Electric and Safran. Both companies have yet to comment on the matter.
