US imposes more sanctions on Sinaloa Cartel members for involvement in illegal fentanyl trade.
US Sanctions Four Members of Sinaloa Cartel for Fentanyl Trade
What Happened?
The United States has imposed financial sanctions on four members of the Sinaloa Cartel, including the son of notorious druglord “El Chapo,” for their alleged involvement in the illicit trade of fentanyl and other drugs. The US Treasury Department has also sanctioned two Mexico-based companies.
Who Was Sanctioned?
The financial sanctions were imposed on Joaquín Guzmán López, Saúl Páez López, Raymundo Pérez Uribe, and Mario Esteban Ogazon Sedano. Joaquín Guzmán López, a member of “the Chapitos,” is the son of former Sinaloa Cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Why Is This Significant?
In a press release, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s administrator, Anne Milgram, explained the Sinaloa Cartel’s poisonous nature and the agency’s efforts against the group. “The Chapitos pioneered the manufacture and trafficking of fentanyl—the deadliest drug threat our country has ever faced—flooded it into the United States for the past eight years and killed hundreds of thousands of Americans,” she said.
The Treasury Department’s Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, Brian Nelson, explained the significance of the latest actions taken in the fight against fentanyl. “Today’s action continues to disrupt key nodes of the global illicit fentanyl enterprise, including the producers, suppliers, and transporters,” he said. “Treasury, in close coordination with the Government of Mexico and US law enforcement, will continue to leverage our authorities to isolate and disrupt Los Chapitos and the Sinaloa Cartel’s operations at every juncture.”
Conclusion
The US government’s actions against the Sinaloa Cartel and its members demonstrate its commitment to fighting the deadly trade of fentanyl and other drugs. By imposing financial sanctions and disrupting key nodes of the global illicit fentanyl enterprise, the US is taking a significant step towards protecting its citizens from the harmful effects of these dangerous substances.
