US deploys troops to Middle East after Iranian attacks on ships.
The United States to Increase Military Presence in the Middle East
The United States is taking action to ensure the safety of key waterways in the Middle East. In response to Iran’s recent seizure and harassment of commercial shipping vessels, the Pentagon has announced that additional F-35 and F-16 fighter jets, along with a warship, will be deployed to the region.
In May, the White House revealed plans for increased activity in the area, but the specifics were not disclosed at the time. Pentagon spokeswoman Sabrina Singh stated, ”The [Pentagon] is increasing our presence and ability to monitor the [Strait of Hormuz] and surrounding waters.” The exact locations and duration of the deployment have not been confirmed.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Navy successfully prevented Iran from seizing two commercial tankers in the Gulf of Oman. These incidents highlight the ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, which have resulted in multiple attacks on shipping in the strategic Gulf waters since 2019.
About a fifth of the world’s crude oil and oil products pass through the Strait of Hormuz, making it a crucial choke point between Iran and Oman.
