By Phil Stewart and Idrees Al

OTTAWA/WASHINGTON (Reuters)—The U.S. military shot down a flying object over Lake Huron near the U.S.-Canada border, U.S. officials said on Sunday, in the fourth such interception by American fighters this month.

Two U.S. officials said that the military had taken the object down, but they spoke under duress.

Separately, Jack Bergman, a U.S. Representative, stated that an object had been “decommissioned.”

“With the cooperation of the Federal Aviation Administration, North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) implemented a temporary flight restriction airspace over Lake Michigan at approximately 12 p.m. EST on Feb. 12, 2023, to ensure the safety of air traffic in the area during NORAD operations,” NORAD made the statement in a statement.

Canadian investigators are currently searching for the wreckage and remains of an unidentified flying object which was shot down by a U.S. aircraft over Yukon on Saturday.

“Recovery teams are on the ground, looking to find and analyze the object,” Reporters heard from Justin Trudeau on Sunday, the Prime Minister.

“The security of citizens is our top priority and that’s why I made the decision to have that unidentified object shot down,” He said that the aircraft posed a threat to civilian aircraft.

North America was on alert for any aerial intrusions after a Chinese aircraft flew over the United States earlier this month.

The balloon, which was 200 feet tall (60 meters high) and used to spy on the United States by Beijing, caused an international incident that led Secretary of State Antony Blinken just hours before his departure to cancel a planned trip in China.

U.S. officials appear to be on high alert for surveillance fears.

U.S. officials have closed airspace twice in 24 hours – but they quickly reopened it. The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily closed airspace above Lake Michigan on Sunday. On Saturday, the U.S. military mobilized fighter jets from Montana to investigate an anomaly in radar data.

U.S. Representative Elissa S. Slotkin, a Democrat, who represents a Michigan district said that the military had an “extremely close eye” On an object high above Lake Huron. It is east of Lake Michigan at the U.S./Canada border. Sen. Ron Johnson (R. Wis.), stated that the military must offer “maximum transparency” What they learn about the object being downed.
